E6600 w/ P5N32-E SLI Plus OC problem

currently trying to OC a E6600 w/ the P5N32-E SLI Plus mobo, Thermalright Ultra-120 extreme, Patriot Xtreme 2x2GB DDR2-800, on Vista 64.

I've been at this all day, and so far the efforts have been futile. Forget about the numbers in Anand's mobo review, I'm having a hard time to get anywhere close to 3ghz as it is.

The computer refuses to even post at 400FSB and above, lowering the multiplier was of no use. I simply can't get the system to run stable at 3ghz, regardless of the FSB/Multiplier. Half the time the system won't post, and the other half involves freeze or BSODs during or soon after booting into windows, and no matter how much voltage I throw at it, it remained completely unstable.

To make things worse, after a crash (which is just about every time), sometimes it would take multiple reboots or clearing CMOS to get the system to post again, and sometimes after that I'd get into the BIOS, and the system would freeze there, at which point it may take multiple reboot to post again, and then... *rinse, repeat* you get the point. I've spent more time rebooting/resetting the mobo than I did trying to OC.

I've tried both the 0501 and 0602 beta bios, neither made any difference at all.

and yea, during the process of writing this post, the system just failed orthos @ barely 10mins in w/ 9x333. I guess even 2.7ghz is too much for those two -_-

What do you guys think is the culprit? should I just go ahead and RMA the board/cpu? I'm open to any suggestions, 'cause I'm out of ideas. Well, there's the sledgehammer and the toss-out-of-window route, but I'm not quite there....yet

I've read enough guides etc. already, thanks. Was seeking input as to whether there's faulty hardware here.

oh well, the point is moot now anyway, as the computer refuses to post at all now after I left it on overnight idling. guess it's time to get a new mobo and see if that was the problem :/

So many variables. Memory settings? Case temps? Voltages? Properly seated heatsink?

It's rarely a new piece of equipment that causes the trouble, rather some variable out of whack.

Dumb question, did you try running memtest and Orthos with all voltages and settings at stock?

Holy mother of reposts...

Anyway, I have the same board and am having problems getting mine stable as well. Tried both the 0502 and 0602 BIOS revisions and nothing seems to work worth a damn. I am going to try the P5K Deluxe and will let you know if it ends up fixing my problems.

i don't understand you guys...

you can't give up on a board so easily...

i fought with this board over 2 weeks before i found a 24/7 setting that worked perfectly for my E6600 at 3.6 ghz (9x400 mem at 1000).

it's a great board, one of the most fun i've owned to tweak to death. took my 6600 to 4400 on dry ice :)

oh well...

ditto, i'm working on my e4300 oc.

at first it would not even post at 1100-1300 fsb. so I kept going. seems to work good at 1400, now need a new sink, and to tweak it more.

if you want to learn to oc. buy my dfi expert. pages of mobo opitions.
