Before it looks like I am just trying to get the best or one of the best machine without doing anything, let me explain.

I need to separate my gaming and work onto two different machines.
I am doing to much work at home, that I need to make sure that I am not causing problems by upgrading drivers and installing new games and apps.

I currently have:
Intel E6600
Asus nForce4 MB

with
Geforce 8800GTX

I was either looking to upgrade to:

Intel E6700 or Q6600
nForce 680i MB

for a new gaming machine or just piecing together enough spare parts to make a machine that can run SQL Server and Visual Studio 2005.

Will I see that much of a difference going from
E6600 with a nForce4 MB -> to the E6700/Q6600 with nForce 680i MB

If there will not be that great of a difference, I could wait until the 1333 Bus chips in the fall.

Any comments/suggestions?

Thanks!

I doubt your gaming performance will change at all from upgrading. Are you planning on overclocking on your gaming machine at all?

You already have one of the best processors on the market. Upgrading to an E6700 would be a complete waste of money IMHO, and upgrading to a Q6600 wouldn't be worth it at the moment, as very few programs make use of the extra two cores (and you'd lose overclocking potential over your current E6600.) Perhaps an upgrade to a quad will be reasonable once the Q6600 is $266 later this year. On the other hand, the Peryn Quads coming out in Q4 this year or early next year will bring a far more mature quad core platform, where you'll be able to have four cores w/o sacrificing OC potential.

If I were you, I'd wait until the Peryns come out before upgrading. Then you can buy a new processor and motherboard in one swoop. It is still yet to be known whether or not the current 680i boards will support the Peryn CPUs, so if you upgrade the motherboard now, you risk not being able to do a much more significant CPU upgrade down the road.

Mark.

How the hell does a NF4 support C2D?

If i remember correctly, that asus you have, cant handle a C2D. Its limited to P4-D's

You cant drop a C2D chip in a old P4 chip even tho its LGA775. The C2D chips require a regulator revision which the old boards dont have.

2 hard drives, no raid, dual boot. problem solved. if you really want to keep the work rig safe, get 2 identical drives and put them in a raid 1 array for work and just use whatever you are now for your own stuff. even if you get that extravagant it's still cheaper than a second computer.

Yeah you should be happy with what you have. No reason to upgrade at the current time.
