Ok, I've narrowed down my choices to the 6600 and a ds3 mobo. Not too sure on ram and cooling though. I want something that will let me overclock to 3.0ghz fairly easily, maybe higher but I will also just run at default a fair amount of the time.

On ram:
Is the crucial worth it over the patriot? The patriot is down to 236 after rebate.

On cooling, whats a decent hsf thats quiet, not a monster and can handle a 3.0ghz OC?

TIA

Not a monster ? go for an XP 120 or Ultra 120 Thermantake. And get the crucial. I had to return some Patriot because it wouldn't even boot my 6300.

I personally dont recommed the DS3 mobo...Frankly the S3 is a better board....The DS3 bioses have been crap and they finally fixed some of the D9 micron issues but in a falky beta bios.....Then you start talking about cool boot problems. i haven't necessarily experienced tyhem cause I run 24/7 and only ever restart not shutdown....I thinkit looks like Gigabyte is going to abandon rev 1 board users. It is my opinion but based onthe long time in between the F7 and a beta bios program that has gone nowhere, I think the writing is on the wall...

The S3 will actually get you likely a more stable higher FSB and seems to be void of micron D9 issues...

Just so you know where I am leaning I am looking to shitcan my DS3 for an Asus P5B deluxe...

Really?? I've never had any cold boot problems using any of the beta or official bioses. Cold boot problems meaning it won't start after shutting it off?

I haven't either but many are plagued with it...

Unless you run F8i bios the Micron D9 issues isn't soleved for most ppl...

For the sad saps that tried the F8j bios, they are RMAing their dead boards now....

Cmon really...the DS3 is nothing more then supposedly the S3 with solid capacitors. One would think better ocer? ONe would think wrong I know of now 5 S3 mobos (all of the ones I have personally seen) that OC better then my DS3 or reports of most users.

The DS3 board is decent with an E6600 because you wont have to even thi high FSB levels...Though it is wildy known 975x chipsets and the asus P5B boards seem to do better with the 4mb C2D's....

Known problems I have had with my DS3

1) Some ram sticks wont boot up after a cmos clear...though they all work in my S3's...

2) I cannot get past 466 on the DS3...though I can reliably hit 500+ on both S3's

Not many but I could actually suffer from cold starts but likeI said I dont turn off the system much and not for any length of time...

Hit the boards at extreme and elsewhere and the DS3 bios issues are wildly talked about...I would buy an S3 before this one, and I would pay more for a P5B deluxe then this one...

I have had this board for awhile...It has had a E6600, E6400 and now a QX6700 in it...I have had it since F5 bios on thru F6, F7, F8a and F8i....

Sorry i am not impressed...PLus their tech support sucks a big one...

Hmm, thanks for the info guys. The S3 is 10 bucks cheaper but I was also debating spending the extra for a p5b deluxe or p5b-e. Uhh, mark, thermantake ultra 120? The Thermalright ultra is friggin huge so were you meaning something else? :)
