setup 1
E6300 from ZZF for $193 free shipping
gigabyte DS3 from ZZF for $152 free shipping
crucial ballistix 5300 C3 1gb kit from ZZF for $71 free shipping
x1800xt from Newegg $200 + $6.12 shipping
total 622.12

using my current antec 500W powersupply, dvd burner, hard drive, case, fans, other coolers.

setup 2
same as above except ram
Corsair xms2 2gb kit 6400 C5 for 185 free shipping
total 736.12

Now I would like to be able to get high memory speeds, and it seems that I may be able to do better with the C3 5300 ram overclocking it and like C3-C4 6400 or C5 8000 speeds or something. Not toally sure, am having a hard time getting the info I want. But I do really like the price of the ballistix, may even go with 4x512 for 2gb for 142.

Setup 3
same as 1 except add another 1gb kit so I have 512x4.
total 693.12

I also think I am going to add a SATA hard drive, but think I would do that later.

Help with any other suggestions also.

#2 b/c having 2 gigs of ram will be the defacto standard for the next couple years. You'll need it especially for Vista (so I hear).

Oh ya, only having two sticks is better than having 4. I think this helps overclocking too

yeah I was looking at getting 2x1gb first but was hoping to find something cheaper that would still be able to hit high memory speeds for overclocking the 6300.

if I could get the price of memory down to 150 or 160 for the 2gb I would be happy.

Edit:

checking out the corsair xms2 5400 C4, for 159. Aslong as I would be able to get good overclock to something like ddr2-900 with something like C5 timings.

I'm in the same boat and seriously looking at doing just 1GB DDR2 667 at CL4 AND making sure it's 1.8v .. less sticks help getting better overclocks.. or so I hear.. and i'm not at all worried about Vista or DX10.. (equipment in my signature tells all).

Still trying to find the right RAM at the right price.. it's the most confusing aspect of the build.

how about setup #4

1gb corsair xms2 pc5400 c4 set.

It likes tighter ram settings better than pc6400 corsair xms2

You'd save some money by getting 1gb and you'd get more FSB out of it. I did

Crucial is rated at 2.2v ! dang

*double check the $40 rebate on the crucial. seems like they are not combinable.*

those look like they are great, what sort of speed are you getting out of yours?

I think that answers the question I have been having. My problem was trying to find the best deal and how C4 5300 would overclock vs the more expensive C5 6400, and not it's looking like they arn't that much different. So I think I may end up going with that. Now I think I may be ordering on monday.
