We recently got an E60 M5 for my wife, so I'm looking for something bit smaller/sportier than the current full size sedan.

I've had the M3 before and love that motor, but the M6 coupes are crazy cheap these days. Either one of these will have to be smg per the wife and I'm essentially insensitive to gas prices.

Any thoughts on these two?

I really don't have experience with the M6, other than riding with an instructor with one on a trackday a few years ago (it was, as expected, fast but awkward on a small track, and ran very hot - in fairness that isn't what it's made for and it did well for such a large, heavy car). I own an E46 M3, but it's a manual and I haven't loved the SMG cars I have experienced. It really depends on your personal preferences. If you will never take the car on a track and the cost is not a factor I might go with the M6 just for the V10 thrills and much plusher interior.

I like them both, but the e46 is still my favorite m3... so I'd probably lean that way. Not sure what the expected maintenance is on the m6 either. I know the m3 is pretty reasonable for what it is. The m3 is probably the best bet for a fun car, but no doubt the m6 is a more comfortable cruiser. I would also assume that there is a much bigger aftermarket for the m3 if you were going to hit the track often.
