So I was lucky enough to score an E5310 for $60 shipped from this post:
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=576859

I ordered it without thinking it would really ship, knowing that it was a 2U passive model. I'd actually like to throw this in a 1U enclosure -- to do this, is it as simple as swapping out the heatsink for a 1U compact one? Am I able to put this E5310 2U passive CPU in a 1U enclosure? TIA!

Probably not, since the mobos are supposedly $500

Well, first you need 2 at a time, next, they are $300-$500, and last, I can't find with with a pci-express x16 slot (for video), only seem to have pci-x and pci-express x8.

Actually its not a very good deal if you have to buy two cpu's and a $300-$500 mobo with registered ram etc.... I'd rather have my quad @ 3.6 than two quads at 1.6

but it really depends on what you do with it also.

exactly. Those motherboards don't OC at all. (at least my duallie didn't, and I have not heard of one that did)

Heh I didn't mean for usage, but to resell them, 60$ for a cpu that can be resold for 200$ or more is BIG BIG revenues :D

Yes, those motherboards are pretty pricy, but I like that fact that there's 2 sockets (= 8 cores), and expansion of up to 64GB of RAM!

So back to my original question, can this 2U passive CPU be used in a 1U, with a simple modification as replacing the heatsink with a small, compact one? Or is there more to it than this?

The motherboard we're looking @ has 16 DIMM slots for RAM -- intially, we're going to be throwing 4GB at it (2x2GB -- 1x4GB is still ridiculously expensive right now). It's going to be our primary database/processing box for the time being, and as we grow, we'll probably throw in another stick or 2 of 2GB RAM each month or so until we fill up all 16 slots.

I'd really like to be able to throw this in a 1U enclosure since this will be going in the datacenter, so the CPU will probably stay boxed until I know the answer to my question.
