Thinking of going the tigerdirect barebones deal for $ 300. Would I notice a big difference in gaming with a 5850? I game at 1920x1200. Was looking at i7 but don't want to spend over 500 right now plus can use the extra parts from barebones in other computers. Looking to play some future games but don't mind turning down some detail a little. Or should I keep what I have and wait for i7 and then get a used 5850 for crossfire? Just looking for a good 1.5 year upgrade with 1035T.

Definitely. How much depends on the specific title, eg. you should see a huge boost in Starcraft 2 (6 faster cores vs. 2 slower cores). On most games, you should still see a healthy increase, since IPC between the two is the same and you'll most likely be able to clok that 1035T higher.

That said, is there anything keeping you from running that E5200 higher? With its low FSB, it should be extremely OC friendly (ie. cheapie mobos running low FSB are alright). I managed to squeeze ~4GHz out of mine on a dinky mATX board.

The Ph2 would definitely be an upgrade over your e5200. It will also push your video card to its limit. 🙂

i went from an e5200 at 3.5 for years, to an i3 at 3.7 and the difference is dramatic. hyperthreading proves to be a big deal.. i remember i couldnt even play gta4 with that e5200, and with the i3 its smooth

You'll see a huge difference. E5200 really is a crippled chip. Even at 3.4GHz it is only as fast as an original conroe E6600 at 2.8GHz in gaming. Take a look at this:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/61?vs=94

That is the comparison between a 2.33 GHz 4M cache conroe vs a 2.8GHz version of your 2M cache pentium. Not even an extra 500MHz is enough to help it fully beat the conroe.

Now if you want to see exactly how your new cpu would perform vs your old, use this:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/59?vs=146

That is a E6850 vs an 1090T. The 1035 should at least go that fast with a moderate overclock. And your old chip is just about as fast as a stock E6850.

The benchmarks dont look all that impressive but you see the difference when you run anything else in the background. I see the difference all the time between my duals and my quad.

I think that's a waste of cash.
Get cheap P67/Z68 mobo <100$ and i3 21xx cpu (2120 was just pice dropped to 117$ by Intel).

That way you get gaming cpu of similar power to overclocked 1035T and you have mobo which will later accomodate Ivy Bridge CPUs.

Or go for 2500K that way you will have CPU that lasts 3-4 years.
