E5200 full load temps 44C

I helped a friend build his new computer today. (Primarily for HTPC duties.)

E5200 w/stock tiny heatsink
EP45-UD3R
2x2GB Gskill DDR2-800
Asus Radeon 3450 (w/HDMI)
6400AAKS 640GB WD SATA HD
Samsung 22X SATA DVD burner
Antec 300 case

Decent parts (I helped him pick them out).

Anyways, we didn't get to overclocking it yet (he chose not to, just yet), but I found that the load temps running Prime95 25.6 to be quite low, considering how miniscule the stock heatsink is. Couldn't get them above 44C. Smart fan was ON. So was EIST and C1E, but at full load, those shouldn't have mattered.

He wants to get a beefier heatsink before we overclock it. Personally, I think it sounds possible to OC it on that tiny stock cooler. At least, up to 80C (20C from TJmax) sounds doable, I don't know if I'd push it any higher. I'm thinking 3.4-3.5Ghz, maybe.

Edit: For another reference point, my other friend's machine has an E5200 in it, at 3.75Ghz, 1.4v (CPU-Z load). Load temps are 63C, with a CoolerMaster Hyper TX2. Smart fan was OFF.

I'm not surprised with the temp, especially at stock. Those are really cool running CPU. You can probably pull 3ghz easily with stock cooler, but I'd get something beefier beyond that.

Stock fan at 3-3.2gHz should still load at under 60c, depending on your case flow

Yes, it does sound doable with those temps so far. But even though you OC it, Does HTPC crank out the cycles for max heat? And if he is constantly running it at those temps you mentioned, I would still get a decent after market HS just for security reasons. I would feel better, if it were my system to see temps around the 60c or lower.

Still those are great temps with a small HS. Btw VL, you helped pick out some reliable hardware. Nice job! 🙂

Both of these quotes are accurate,... you can get a nice overclock in the range of 3.0 - 3.2 ghz on the STOCK cooler without breaking 60 C in most situations,.... if you want to really push the overclock past that, then you will want a new heatsink.

There have been reviews showing this, and many people including myself who have verified it.

If he wants to spend extra cash for peace of mind,.. then let him do it,... however it is not needed. Some people need that peace of mind though.

Edit-remember even at 60C you still have lots of cushion prior to any danger area,... not until you reach 70C should you really be concerned (intel puts the specs for dual core wolfdales at <72.4C for safe range)

Shite!!! In that case leave the stock cooler on and try for 3.8ghz now....LOL...


I ran mine at 3.6ghz and I was into the 70's during a short prime95 run, but far away from the 90's.....

I have two of these CPU's both running at 3.4Ghz on the stock cooler.

One is in an Antec 900 at 1.3v and that does not get above 64C. The other one is in an SR-71 (now sold as Akasa Eclipse 62) and that hits the same sort of temps but runs at 1.27v instead.

I think 3Ghz should be easy with the stock cooler and an Antec 300 and you can probably get more out of it if the voltages are low.

Edit: forgot to mention that the temps were reached with an 8 hour prime95 blend test.

Yeah. 🙂 They are running at 16C away from TJmax right now, due to the cooler winter weather. In summer, I'm sure that they will be back up to 9C away from TJmax.
