I'm just about ready to go ahead and order some stuff from Newegg tonight to upgrade my PC, and I was looking for input as to which processor I should get.

Here is what the system is going to consist of:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
GIGABYTE GV-NX85T256H GeForce 8500GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

I will mainly be using the computer to view HD encoded videos, capturing old VHS tapes to DVD with my Hauppage card, as well as a video game or two.

The price difference between the E4500 & E2180 is $40, and I wasn't sure if I would really see that much difference in what I'm using the PC for.

Any suggestions?

OK, here is what I had been planning on.

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
GIGABYTE GV-NX85T256H GeForce 8500GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
Antec earthwatts EA430 ATX12V v2.0 430W
COOLER MASTER Elite 330 RC-330-KKN1-GP link

Now, if I switch over to the IP35 and Kingston, would I still be safe going with the 430 Earthwatts PS?

The total price came to $494 with the above if I was going to go with the E4500.

I really need to stay around that price, as it's someone else buying the system for me (I do all of his video editing).

Ugh.

And now I see the case is out of stock.

I'm honestly lost as to what I should do to stay within the budget.

My Kingston Value RAM 667 overclocks to 800 MHz easily with VDIMM increased to 1.9 from 1.8 V. I don't think you really need Value RAM 800.

Well, here's what I came up with...

Kingston N5 DDR2 800 ValueRAM
Earthwatt 500 Watt PS
IP35
GIGABYTE GV-NX85T256H GeForce 8500GT
Samsung DVD SATA Burner
E2180

All of this would be $434 shipped.

I would like to put the new components in a case that would fit the Antec PSU.

I'd rather not go much more than $40 more than I'm already spending.

Does this rig seem good enough for what I want to do?
Am I gonna have to get custom cooling for the CPU & Case?

I guess I'm also really worried about frying stuff, as again I've never over clocked as I never felt the need to.

i dont think there is much benefit to the e4500 over the e4400.

especially if you are going to o/c. just get a e4400 m0 stepping. its about $20 less tahn a e4500 and they o/c about the same.

I think the same-class processor should overclock about the same, with difference mainly in the multiplier lock. The difference between E2 and E4 (and E6 for that matter) is the cache size. It is suppose to make 10% difference so if you really need to squeeze 10% more out of the chip, it'll be worth going for E4. But then again, if you aren't going to really need the 10%, then you might as well save the money until 45nm chips drop in price and then you an afford a much better processor using the savings you've enjoyed.

No problem with that Earthwatts. I see very little advantage with the E4500 when you can engage the E2140 for $60. E4xx0 is faster than E21x0 by about 200MHz at the same core speed. Both are very fast once you get them north of 3.0GHz.
