Is the e4500 for $125 at newegg a good deal? What is the latest/best e4xxx processor? I can't seem to find too many.

This isn't for my pc obviously I'm upgrading someone elses. Thanks.

It's a good deal considering how well it overclocks, but what does this person do with his or her computer? An E21x0 or even an E1200 Celeron might be plenty, and be less expensive.

True...one can get an E2160 for $72.50 w/free shipping right now at ClubIT.
If you go that route, you can also get free shipping on some OCZ Freeze Extreme that's on sale also for $5.99.
This chip should be able to hit 3.0gHz easily & I don't think there's $50 worth of performance difference IMHO.

what about for the long run though? I am guessing both are more than enough for what he needs now but what about in a year or two. probably some moderate gaming would be the most intensive thing this person does.

The chip is a fine choice to fit between the E2xxx and E6xxx series. However, I don't think $125 is that great a deal.

Micro Center has it for $109.99 on their web site. Cost to ship to me is around $7, making it $117. Or, if you are lucky enough to live near a Micro Center B&M, they currently have the E4500 on sale for $99.99 plus tax in-store.

Will it be overclocked? I'd say that a bump to 3GHz (should be fairly easy with any overclockable motherboard) would still be reasonably competitive a year or two from now considering it's pretty much a $100 CPU.

Besides, in a couple of years, there'll be neat new stuff out & your friend will be ready for an upgrade...hehehe.

Micro Center has E4500's on sale for 99.00. If you have one by you, get there. If not, check their site.

I guess there are two relatively close to me in Chicago. It's an hour of driving though both ways. Maybe I'll get it from there website though unless I'm feeling up for an adventure.

i consider the e4500 a very good cpu, achieves 3.2ghz with stock cooling a voltages with 2mb cache, but i'd consider the 7xxx series that will cost the same as the 4xxx series but 45nm so it will oc much more... And the p45 chipset will be out then i guess... I know coz i'm waiting 4 that to get my pc =)

4500 is a great chip. I get to 3.2Ghz without any trouble. You can go for 3.3Ghz for daily work with a slight increase in vCore, and then 3.4Ghz stable if you want to push more. It won't really get to 3.5Ghz without some serious heat issue.

Get it from Newegg or someone with free shipping and no tax.

Yea best deal is @ Microcenter atm. but for longer run i rather throw in extra 100 bucks for a Q6600 8MB cache > E4500 2MB cache. Well, its just my opinion, go with whatever affordable for you.

throwing in another $100 almost doubles the cost, I'm pretty certain that makes it almost double his available budget too.
