E4400 o/c on GA-965G-DS3 help please

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a E4400 and a Gigabyte-965G-DS3 and 2 gig Kingston PC5300 (667) ram,

I have managed to overclock to 2.7 following the advice i have found in here, but can't seem to go past that,

my settings are:

CPU host freq: 270 (270 x 10)

I have the memory set x2 (1:1) and the pci clock fixed at 100,

the memory is currently at 540 well under it's rated 667

the memory timings are defined by SPD


I would like to reach at least 3.0ghz, will I need to increase voltages?

my PSU is an Antec truepower 450w

And i am using the stock cooler (CPU idle temp is 31 @ 2.7)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

 
cpu LOAD temp is more important. And yeah if it won't go higher, you probably need to increase the voltage. But it would also be nice if you stated what happens when you increase the fsb ? BSOD's, won't post, etc etc ?
 
i will test the under load temp now, but when I increase the FSB past 270 it does not post, it just goes in a cycle of turning on then off and then eventually loads the default settings into the bios
 
UPDATE: at idle I am getting temps of 40 degs, at load on Orthos 65 degs. I guess this a little hot? this is with coretemp, as TAT is giving me +20 on those figures for some reason, can't be right
 
Another Update: I have ordered a new PSU : OCZ 700w PSU, plus an artic cooling freezer 7 pro should be coming on wednesday

can anyone please tell me if I am doing this right? I really was hoping i could clock this chip up to 3Ghz since that would only be 300FSB and my ram will be running stilll under it's recommended rating of 667
 
how come? i got that mb after advice i got from these forums, also i don't really think that your last comment was very constructive
 
You got the best chipset, ntemples, don't worry about it. Your problem is that those chips don't go any higher than that, unless you CSEL mod them: here's how. Good luck.
 
but surely it should go up to 300FSB? it's all i need really, I have just realised i don't have the latest bios, i am currently on F7 Bios and there is an F8 Bios which apparently has fixed a problem with overclockability, i will flash the new one and try it first.

I have the same motherboard, rev1.3.

You'll probably have to up the voltage. With my e4300, the motherboard wants to up my voltage once I go past 2.4. I have also heard that the more recent batches of e4000s aren't as good for O/Cing. Whether that is true, I don't know. Honestly, I'd question how much you'll benefit from stressing out your system like that. Figure out what it likes and ask yourself how much more performance you'd really get by going past 3ghz.

Thanks for your advice, i think you are probably right it seems quite speedy anyway at 2.7 probably the extra 300Mhz won't make that much difference, i have realised that the 965G chipsets aren't as good at overclocking as the 965P chipset (from what people say).

I do have an Arctic Freezer Pro coming tomorrow and a 700W OCZ PSU, so i might try increasing the voltage slightly to see if i can boost it a bit, but if it doesn't want to do it i will be happy to just leave it the way it is.

If i do increase the voltage by how much should i do it by? and do i need to change any other settings in the bios?
 
UPDATE: After much reading up (which i thought i had done in the first place) it seems that the 965G board ISN'T a very good overclocker, so i have decided to RMA it and buy the 965P-DS3 instead!! will let you know how that goes.
 
UPDATE: I have now swapped the mobo's over, have gone straight up to 3.1ghz on stock vcore and temp under load is : 52degs according to Coretemp, that is with the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7, I am running orthos now seems fine, FINALLY I AM HAPPY!!! 😱)

Plus i bought a EVGA 8800gts 640 OC to go with it!!
 
I have a Gigabyte g965 ds3 with an e4400 now also. Through my testing I have gone up to 277 FSB. Once I hit 278 FSB I don't POST. I think this is a limitation of the motherboard and is probably the best one can hope to get from the g965. Still not a bad improvement at all.

Gigabyte makes junks, just like ECS. 50% of E4xx0 boards should be able to hit 3.2GHz with 1.45Vcore. Naturally, a very small population will have trouble crossing 2.8GHz (3 sigma rule).
