E4300 Temperature Problem!

I just built a computer for the first time 2 days ago and installed a Core 2 Duo E4300 with stock cooling and AS5. I overclocked it to 2.4ghz without any errors or instability problems. I had been using Asus Probe II and SpeedFan, which reported idle temps of 30C and load temps of 45C using Orthos. However, my friend suggested I use Core Temp. Core Temp reported a completely different reading, with idle temp of 45C and load temp as high as 70C! My case provides plenty of air flow with 6 case fans, so 70C seems very very high to me. When I touched the heatsink, it was only mildly warm. Which program should I trust???

Run Orthos Large mode for 10 minutes. Record and post numbers in Speedfan and CoreTemp. CoreTemp can be 15C hotter than Speedfan. 65C in Speedfan is okay for testing. I wouldn't go much higher than this.

Speedfan and Coretemp show the same temps for me, at most a 1C difference on the cores if that and it's usually speedfan showing it hotter.

ok i ran Orthos large mode for 10 minutes, SpeedFan reports 46C while CoreTemp reports 61C. Asus Probe II says 40C...

Looks okay. CoreTemp is +15C. I'd trust the 46C number. The stock cooler should run hotter than 40C at stock voltage and 2.4GHz...unless your room is below 65F.

From what i figured out, for e4300, core temp and intel thermal analyses tool are reporting the correct temputures, +15 from speedfan. And if u use core temp or TAT, alot of people are getting around 70 under load for e4300.

k, i think i'll just trust the CoreTemp numbers for now just to be safe... i lowered the vcore to 1.225v and ran Orthos small fft mode. Now according to CoreTemp, idle temp is 46C and load temp at 65C... thats not too bad, right?

Yah, the E4300's run hot (probably the epoxy they use for the IHS instead of solder on more expensive chips). Mine did about 65C load on stock cooling with stock volts. I'm now using an Enzotech Ultra-X and get low 50s. Basically if it's stable, it's alright.

Where do you keep getting this info that certain C2Ds have a soldered-on IHS. It doesn't make sense.

Of course it does - more expensive chips are made with better components. Solder will transfer heat from the core to the IHS better than any paste. Here's a few threads on people yanking their IHS's off:

the E4xxx series is much easier to do because of the paste; E6xxx are soldered and requires heat to melt it (butane torch seems to be popular). Google for more info.

Solder is not soft enough to scrape off with a fingernail unless it is HOT and then you won't use a fingernail. Sorry, it's thermal epoxy. Silver in color but not solder....
