Well then make it 2. When the game won't fit on one disc, you use another one... that's how it's always been. FF7 was 4 discs or so right?

I can believe that a game like GTA4 would have such issues.

Perhaps they should do like the PS3 and have an "install" option to put the second disc onto the HDD?

You could still use 2 discs, but if you have the HDD, you can avoid disc swaps.

That works with RPGs because your progress is limited by the story. Games like GTA are free-roaming.

Exactly. Maybe they could split different islands or cities onto different discs, but that would be annoying as hell changing the disc just to change cities.

Wasnt this one of the reasons Sony went with Blu ray?

Yup, an install option wouldn't help those with Core system so Rockstar wouldn't go that route. They will probably just cut something out of the 360 version and, unfortantly, also cut it out of the PS3 version just to keep them the same. The Leftover content will eventually show up on Marketplace as DLC.

Wouldn't that be ironic? Last generation, the Xbox got PS2-quality games because developers targeted the lowest common denominator (the PS2 with the weakest hardware of the generation). Now the tables are turned.

We'll see how this turns out... like mlm said, I don't think this game would deal with multiple DVDs well. I imagine the majority of the disc space is consumed by models and textures. If that's the case, they would have to break it down by areas of the city as opposed to sections of the storyline. I can't imagine that storyline data takes up much disc space at all, especially if cutscenes are rendered on the fly.

Because what was exclusive? Every game that was released on both consoles? Huh? Mugs wasn't talking about just one game here...

It's a rumor from a page intended to be full of rumors and cites it as such. Why get worked up? Considering that the webpage didn't even hint at a source outside of "certain E3 parties", doesn't this sound exactly like something out of a "tired of defending the company's decision to put Blu-Ray in every system" Sony employee's wet dream?

We have nothing factual one way or another, but anytime I hear news that is so perfectly packaged for one side of the competition, I personally would be suspicious.

Does anyone know if the 360 can be told by software to not kick back to the dashboard when the DVD drive is opened? If not that would be a real pain for multi-disc games.

Blue Dragon is already out in Japan and it is 3 discs I believe, so the Japanese should know the answer to that question.

anyway, the ps2-xbox thing is completely true...splinter cell was always much better on xbox. sure some games were ported directly, but when they tried, they could get the xbox games to look much nicer.

There have been actual quotes from Rockstar employees saying as much. They've admitted that working with DVDs is a challenge--it was even an issue for SA.

The only quotes from Rockstar employee that I'm aware of dealt with Core 360s not having a HDD. He went on to say that both platforms have their own unique set of challenges. Except for this rumor, I haven't heard anything about DVD issues.

It is worth mentioning that every display of GTAIV to this point has been from the 360.

Well, if they cut some of the lame-ass radio stations they could probably fit it on one DVD. Also, we really dont need long CGI video IMO. Just a quick intro and into the game.

They might say that but I'm sure Sony went with Blu-Ray for the sake of pushing Blu-Ray.

Audio doesn't use THAT much disc space. An hour of audio at 192 kbps is only 86 MB.

IIRC, the cutscenes in the GTA III series used the regular game engine; that is, they weren't pre-rendered and didn't take up nearly as much space as if they were pre-rendered.

The budget for this game must be incredible if they're filling up a DL DVD with models and textures.

I think the audio portion of Vice City (on PC) was like 500megs. ICBW.

Unless you're using high-quality formats. I doubt that would be the case here, but there are already a few PS3 games coming that are supposed to be using full 7.1.

Do you have a link to any of them? In the OP, draggoon01 said San Andreas was 2.8 GB, which means that Rockstar would have had 6 more gigs to play with on a DL DVD or 1.5 GB on a single layer DVD.

I don't know where he got his information either, but clearly someone has a bad source. :p
