'E3' is no more...what're your thoughts on this?

Well, i was watching TechTV...errr...G4 yesterday, and they told me that the major companies for E3 have pulled out and won't be using it anymore. Just wanted to know what peoples thoughts were on this. I personally, am sad cause I never got to go to it. I prolly wouldn't have ever been able to go anyhow though. =/

Well, there will just be another expo with a different name right? I mean...US has taken the global gaming market in japan. So They'll most likely host it here?

Haha you watch G4.

I know, only for XPlay, and sometimes Brainiacs. ^_^ Wish TechTV hadn't sold out. G4 blows w/ their new line-up of shows. I hate everything they play now cept for the 2 that i watch. Really sucks they got rid of the Screensavers...=/

The biggest problem that E3 had was with people that didn't belong there. When I went there in 2001 (yes, I know, I shouldn't have been there...) I actually saw people in a full sprint run to the Nintendo booth as soon as the doors open, and a 2-3 hour line for the Final Fantasy booth. I'd say that about 2/3 of the people there didn't belong there.

The other problem was in reporting the news, there was so many things there that the journalists spend 16 hour days trying to cover as much as they can. Most of the juicy bits happened in the press conferences.

I always wanted to go, but I can understand closing it down. The industry is spending millions of dollars for an elaborate trade show. The journalists can obtain the exact same information from the companies directly instead of having a huge conference on an arbitrary day that costs tons of money.

So instead of a huge volume of gaming information once a year, all of that information is going to be evenly spread throughout the year. In the end the show wasn't really benefitting anyone except the guests that got to go 😛

Yea i mean, the floorspace, union costs, booth construction, staffing, hotel/travel/food, production costs of special E3 materials, promos, etc...

It all adds up quickly... I know that companies like Nintendo, Sony, EA etc... often spend 5+ MM$ on their booth production alone... sure some of this is amortized over a few years but add the staff and all other things I mentioned and you could have a 5-15 million dollar expenditure per year, easily.

E3 also has become such a "noisy" event with regard to PR/Announcements that its dominated by the hardware releases like the wii/ps3/360 and major publisher titles... so there's not much there for the smaller guys.

screensavers was best when Leo Laporte was still hosting it... when the crew changeup happened, I didn't like the show that much.
