Also I want to add, is there any performance benefit from running the memory at 1:1 with the CPU? Coming from AMD and Socket939, running in "dual channel" mode was important. Is this the case with Core2?

Not important, and I see higher Sandra throughput numbers running the ram as high as it'll go async.

In applications and other benchmarks? Less than margin of error.

Is it me, or has Intel cheapened out on their stock heatsink? I've opened E8400, E2160, and E4500 recently and they all have the cruddy small heatsink. I guess it's not too bad if you're needing a low profile socket 775 heatsink, but come on... E8400 costs $200+, throw a decent heatsink.

Quick question, is it worth it to get an E2180 over the E2140 or E2160? I plan on using the Abit I35-E and 2 gigs of Corsair XMS for a spare build. Just looking for something to be a bit faster than my current FX-55 single core. I use it for gaming, and burning dvd's etc.

2160 or 2140 are your best bets. If you're gonna game and burn DVDs, you don't need a quad for the time being. Although, if you're gonna use PS2 emulator, get a quad or the e8400.

Note: when I had OC at 3.0 ghz /w 333 x 9, vCore was 1.345 (cpu-z) and idle temps were 22-25 C and Max Load: 54 C /w same ambient temps as above... So yeah, huge increase in load temps.
So M0 gives me more leeway during summer when it gets hottt... So I can still keep at this clock during summer and be fine.

Just wanted to thank you guys for all the information that you have on these boards.
I could not get this to go above 2.66 until I figured out the ram settings.
I set the reference frequency to 266 the memory frequency to 533 and dropped my volts to 2.04 for the ram. After that it started first time.


The ram settings really helped this for me.

Now , i have a small question , when you guys OC , are your PCs starting up normally , or you get a double boot ?

If i live mine at 2.67 or if i lower the multi and increase the FSB to get to 2.9/3 startup is smooth.

Once i leave the multi 10x and increase the FSB and the volts , i get a small on/off sound like when i restart the PC ....

RAM: 2*512 + 2* 1Gb of Corsair XMS2 667 C5 = 3Gb. running @ 357MHz (714MHz effective) syncronous, dual channel, 4-4-4-12
Cooling: AC Freezer 7 pro (~50C dual prime load in UK summer)

24hr dual Prime blend stable.
IntelBurn test stable - about 1hr, gets hot (65C+) so not tried longer.

won't do 8*400 for 3.2 (mobo or FSB wall, guess CPU FSB as mobo has good rep for higher)
thinking about 2 new 1GB or 2GB sticks of same type memory, but not sure if I will lose dual channel (heard it doesn't matter much, but still...)
Will probably upgrade to Q9550 or Q9650 when prices hit ~£100 (guess about this time next year when Nehalem has bedded in)

Jaysus, that's some O/C Hokie, on air no less. :Q

I lapped my NB and PWM 'sinks this weekend like we talked about @ the Raptor Pit, my temps dropped 5C on each. Those 'sinks were as crooked as a politician.
I've also got a Big Typhoon on the way. I have the exact same chip as yours, but would be happy with 3.0 - 3.2 GHz stable.

Glad to hear it helped! 3.0GHz should be a breeze with a big typhoon. I had 3.2GHz perfectly stable at 1.445Vcore (1.41v after Vdroop). No two chips are alike of course, but just for reference.

No worries...twas a fun OC and ran every bench I threw at it, but only the good lord knows if it was prime stable. You couldn't pay me enough to run small FFTs at that Vcore on air.

The E4400 has been retired now, replaced by an E8400 (board replaced by a Biostar Tpower I45). Great chips, some of the greatest for the price in their day. RIP E4xxx!
