Does it occur after you eat fatty foods/fast food/greasy food? Everything you eat affects your skin and hair, so beware of that. Also, blot your face throughout the day with a tissue, letting the oil stay on your face clogs your pores.

ok so basically we've got
- food
- stress
- temp/humidity

does temp/humidity make sense? I thought that would only cause sweating, not oilyness

Ignore comments from people who've never really had a problem.

The problem is, you're probably damaging your face with medications. Washing your face too much or too harshly adds to the damage. For me, acne medications actually caused acne and shiny skin. I started washing no more than once a day with a mild soap (jergen's extra), and it cleared up and went back to normal. I stopped freaking out over the occasional zit. Now I don't even use soap. A good mild shampoo touches your face anyway... why not use that to lightly wash your face. This advice has worked for a few people. The oil you're getting is from your own skin trying to heal and deal with the abuse you're putting to it.

Talk to a Mary Kay consultant. (really)

My wife used to do Mary Kay and I learned a lot about my face. Madthumbs is right... Oil is your skin's way of protecting itself while it heals. My face is normally greasy for an hour or so after I wash it with normal soap. With shampoo, it's much less... barely greasy for only 15 min or so. Then blotting with a towel takes care of what little is there.

Want no more grease? NEVER use anything but water and your hands to clean your face. Of course, you'll be dirty, and your skin will smell, but that's the way your skin is made. Who had soap before civilization???

Try the shampoo thing for a week and see. You won't like it at first because your skin will feel different. But I think you'll like it over time.

I have this problem. I also have very oily scalp. When I was young, I was always afraid that if a girl touched my face or run her hand through my hair, she would be grossed out. One time, a teacher put her hand on my shoulder and I tensed up. She said, "I'm not gonna hit you". But I can't help it -- I'm so afraid of repulsing girls away....

In the middle of the day, if I put toilet paper on my scalp, it will soak up the oil and become semi-clear.

The real reason for oily/dry skin is your body's hormones. All that stuff about exterior factors is baloney. Stuff you apply to your face can only treat the symptoms, not the cause of the oilyness.

Taking birth control pills can improve skin appearance, but guys are OOL :p

so I have to votes for too much soap and one vote that says it's wrong.
well here's my current system:
wash my face 2-3 times/day with just water when it feels oily, then blot it dry.
wash with cetaphil at night, blot dry and wait 20mins to make sure, then apply tazorac.
take 100mg minocycline in the morning and evening.'

sometimes when I wash my face at night, I use more cetaphil than other times...wonder if that's it.
then again, I think these people suggesting stress might be right, because I do get more oily when I feel stressed

Don't you wish there was 1 real true answer? Sad to say there isn't. Just everyone and their own home remedy, or what they think works, or what may work, or what they tried and it did work. I will tell you, straight up, I've tried everything from oil free to oil medium to oil plenty. I've tried changing my diet, I've tried over the counter medication, I've tried washing once with no soap, washing twice with no soap, once with soap, twice with soap, several times with different creams, I've gone from 250lbs to 170lbs to 185lbs by modifying everything I eat in an attempt to have less oily skin.

The only thing I ever found that really helped me was this shampoo by Nutragena (SP?). It said OIL FREE on the bottle. I bought 2 bottles of it and it completely dried my hair out until it was like hay. I didn't know what was causing my hair to dry out so much until I ran out of both bottles. While my hair was dried out, I had nearly flawless skin.

Funny thing is, I can no longer find that shampoo.

Here is my daily regiment towards facial care:

1. Wake up, take a shower, washing my face with acne medicine.
2. Put small amounts of lotion (Lubriderm) on my face.
3. Throughout the day, I get a wet paper towel and just wipe my face to get rid of excess oil.
4. Don't wash my face in the evenings. I've found I actually break out more if I wash my face in the evenings.
5. I do get occasional breakouts but just let it alone and usually goes away pretty soon (dry skin that flakes off).

Yeah, I can't really believe the "external factors" theory.

Besides, I have to wash my face with soap frequently -- otherwise I just feel so grimy and icky during the day (like my pores are all clogged up).

I produce so much oil, I can see the little droplets of oil on my scalp's pores at the end of the day. I produce so much oil, all I need is vinegar and I can make a nice salad dressing!
