1. Does E-ZPass NY Tags work through those "dot-matrix" patterns at the top of some windshields? I'm uncertain how they are read at tollbooths. :confused:

2. In addition, how close to the center of the windshield would work, since I find directly above or below the rear view mirror distracting.

Thanks in advance for any assistance! :beer;

Works fine for me.

Mine is very close to center, I have it behind the rear view mirror to the right so I don't see it while I am in the drivers seat.

Just for clarification, you too have that "dot-matrix" pattern at the top of your windshield fstime? I was thinking to the right of the rear view mirror as well so it's not distracting.

Thanks in advance for your response! :beer;

I have the dot pattern in the center of the windshield behind in the rear view mirror.

The entire upper ~7 inches of the windshield is tinted as well so it is not very visible from the outside as well.

they have a list of cars that has special windshield that ezpass wont work through.. I tried to get an external tag for my convertible so I can park with the top down but no go.. im stuck with an internal tag that someone can take if i leave the top down..

most people just tape it to the dash by the center of windshield also.

Exactly where I have mine, as well. The most convenient place for it if you commute daily. I really don't notice or think about the transponder anymore. It works on RF. Basically a big RFID (active, if I remember correctly). So long as the signal isn't blocked by thick metal and plastic, you could put it anywhere in the car.

If you aren't sure the signal will be picked up, you can always "test" it the first time by going through a CASH lane instead of E-ZPass only.

Mine isn't from NY, but they tell us to keep it 2" away from any dot matrix pattern... Forget that.. mine is about 1/4" away and reads fine.

My mirror is in the middle, so the tag has to be a good 6-7" off center, still reads fine.

I wish they'd make them black instead of standoutish white.

It should work fine. When I use mine I put it on the window to the right of my rearview mirror about an inch from the top of the window. It has never failed to read. You can also just keep it on the dashboard if you want. It works on a RF so the signal gets to it just about all the time. (it won't in the glove box or if it is in the foil bag)

You can probably be a little more "free" with your placement than you think. I've had my tag (between two cars) sit on the dashboard, behind the dot matrix pattern, and even inside the glovebox, and it's always been read. My girlfriend keeps here in the corner of her dashboard on the passenger side and it works fine.

Good to know fstime, my windshield only has the dot pattern at the top, zero tint otherwise.

Your placement on the windshield is exactly where I would like to place my tag since it's the only place that I don't find distracting; below my rear view mirror just obstructs my field of vision :(

Thanks for your experience bruceb! :beer;

I asked specifically about NY tags since I wasn't sure if they differ internally from region to region. The consensus seems to be a few inches off the center work fine, be it above, below or to the right or left on the rear view mirror. I too wish they came in a color other than white, gray would be my choice, but right now I just don't want and violations for my tag not being read or for hold it while driving.

Thanks for your input SpatiallyAware! :beer;

I have one of those induction stickers(for Sunpass) and I stuck it as far up in the center as possible so I dont see it.

You're not the first person to mention it working from inside a glove box, now I'm not paranoid about the "tin foil" bag! :eek:

Thanks for your input xanis! :beer;

Considering they wanted my plate info, lying isn't the way to go rsutoratosu. ;)

bruceb, I just wanted to let you and others know that to the right of the rear-view mirror works perfectly. I've got my tag placed about 4" from the top of thewindshieldd and 1" to the right like you suggested, the best thing is that it is completely hidden by the mirror so I can't see it from the drivers seat! :)

I don't have a problem with the tag through the dot matrix on my windshield.

You guys realize that these things work with RF, right? "Visibility" doesn't play in to it at all, unless you mean RF shielding. That's also why in rentals they are encased in a metal box that you have to pull the tag out of if you want to use it.

Interesting. The North Texas toll tag used to be a huge plastic monstrosity, but now it is a simple sticker with flexible electronics inside. I thought NY would have been ahead of the game.

Mine is behind that strip at the top and it works fine. It's dead center behind the rearview mirror because of my ocd friends. I think it's less distracting if you keep it slightly to the right of the rearview mirror.

Get a mass.gov one if you want one with no fees. I think you have to have auto CC topups once it gets to < $10 though.

I have a PA one, I just toss it on the dash. Once it fell on the floor and it was still read fine.
