e what is biochemistry?

is there a way i can double major in biochem and biology?

or is biochem a mix of chem and bio.

biochem overlaps with a lot of my current major courses... so i might as well major in that too.

what is your major? if it is biology, you might as well change it to biochem and minor in biology. Biology alone is useless, unless you plan on going to grad or med school.

yeah, i'm currently a bio major.... and there isn't a minor for bio at my school

I definitely want to go to grad school ... or some kind of a professional school (medical/optometry/etc)

I'm majoring in "integrative biology" .. minoring in biomechanics... thinking of doing a second major in biochemistry.. since they overlap each other except for few courses.

At UofT, biochem is a specialist program. You only have to do one specialist, or two majors, or a major and two minors to graduate.

Why study all that crap if you are going to Medical school?
I PROMISE you they will teach it to you, and you WILL learn it when you are there.
Study the classes you WON"T have in medical schhol when you are in college.

what if i don't get into med school?

plus... I'm not 100% sure that med school is where my heart wants to go.

I'm still young though... i got a lot of time to figure things out.

You want to major in biochem and you don't even know what it is?

Biochemistry applies the principles of organic chemistry to biological organisms. For the study of human metabolism alone it is worth it, I think. It definitely requires two semesters of Organic Chemistry, so if you haven't taken that for your Bio major you might want to reconsider trying to do Biochem.

only reason I'm considering it is because it overlaps with a LOT of my bio major tracking courses.... except for a semester worth of classes. So I might as well try to get a degree in that too.... since there are sooo many microbio or bio majors ... i want to distinguish myself somehow... or at least try to.

So you've already taken organic? Did you like it?

Actually to be a Bio major alone, you already need 2 semesters of organic chemistry in addition to general chem, which is basically the lower div. pre-reqs for BioChem. It's the upper div that makes a difference, where in addition to taking upper division integrative bio, you still gotta take uppder division chemistry courses (bleh...) On the upside, some of the upper divs overlap also 🙂

i already checked the two majors and compared them... they look pretty similar to me. except for the upper division courses like "physical chemisty I and II", etc.

I need to go talk to an advisor and see what the best choice is for me.... one day when i find some time

if you want to make yourself stand out, you should get a minor in computer science, bioinformatics is hot!

yeah... but i'm interested in biomechanics (aspect of engineering.. it's a subfield of biomedical engineering)... more so than computer science.

Plus I think it'll serve me better in the future...

I'm only in my third semester... I should be taking organic now but i wanted to take a break from chemistry last semester... so i'm taking organic and all the rest of the good stuff starting next sem. This semester is nothing compared to the next few semesters :frown:

If I were you I'd wait until after taking orgo to decide whether or not you want to try to major in biochem. Chemistry gets quite a lot more advanced after general chem, and if you've got to take two semesters of P-Chem then I feel sorry for ya 😉. P-Chem, in most peoples' eyes is as hard as undergrad-level chemistry gets. If you like chem and are up to the challenge, then go for it.
