e-sata external hd

I guess I'm just not in the know these days like I used to. A buddy has a 750GB seagate e-sata ext. HD. The USB port on the device went out. It has a port for an e-sata beside the USB port.

I'm guessing some sort of e-sata->USB cable I need? I was just going to take the HD out of the case but it seems to be a pita so I'm going to see about this cable.

Is it just a sata drive in there that I could pull out and plug up to his desktop?

How can you tell the USB port has failed and not the disk iself?

If you want to switch to eSATA, you'd be best off with a PCI or PCI-E eSATA card in your PC, along with an eSATA cable.

Or just get another housing. The new housing would problably cost $20 to $40. An eSATA card and cable would probably be in the same range, or maybe a bit cheaper.

Yes, it's just a SATA drive in there. If you don't want to buy a new housing, you could also use a SATA-to-USB adapter cable. Those are about $15. But they won't protect the disk at all.
