e-mail thank you letters

When applying for IT jobs are e-mail thank you letters acceptable or is a classic letter the way to go?

If so what is the proper format? Any examples that I find are of the letter format. Obviously you don't need the address. Should you still address it to Mr. or Ms. X? Can you send the text in the body of the e-mail or should you send it as letter in the classic format as an attachment?

Or it is just a bad idea period?
 
I suppose it's acceptable these days, but I still find letter much more nice/formal. If you live nearby it only takes a day for them to get it anyway.
 
I would send a hand written letter. It proves that you actually put a little bit of time in it, and won't get eaten by a spam filter.
 
I don't mind email thank-you's. Believe it or not, only about 10% of candidates I interview bother to even go that far.

That's got to be the coldest way of thanking someone short of leaving a thank you on an answering machine..

Write a note and mail it.
 
Just send an email - people don't have time these days to read long paper letters. Thank you emials shoul not be long either. Short and concise works.

Absolutely. Hand written, or even printed normal business letter format hand signed with decent stationary is really the way to go.

The job doesn't go to the most qualified candidate, it goes to the one that wants it the most and shows it.

oh so wrong. E-mail is quickly dismissed or ignored. Do you have any idea how much E-mail a manager gets everyday? Compare that with regular mail that you sit down and read.

Don't E-mail thank you letters. It's unprofessional IMHO.

 
i vote for emailing a thank you for a couple of reasons: 1) regular mail will take 2 days to get to person (one day for USPS to process & deliver, the 2nd day for someone at the company to take the time to sort thru & open the mail)...2) most interviewers/managers have a good idea who they're going to hire after all the interviews are completed, and only in very rare situations will your thank you note break any "tiebreakers" (in your favor) if it's a toss-up between you & someone else. email away!
