e machines T3958 motherboard????

Sorry this is kinda' cross post from PSU's but since I now know it's not the PSU......

So my sis-in-law says she's got some version of the dreaded AV virus. Popups saying she needs to buy, can't even open a browser window, etc. (I've had damn near everyone I know come to me w/ this virus. It's a doozie, fortunately not damaging)

Anywhoo.......bro-in-law unplugs it from their house, brings it down to me & when I go to plug it in, there's nothin'. Zip/zilch/nada!! I put my desktop back on & powers up fine. Put theirs back on & nothin'!!

I pulled the side & there's definitely a light on the mobo when I plug it in, but hitting the power button just won't power it up.

Tried new PSU, same prob. I'm assuming motherboard now. (power button's fine, I even tried jumpin mobo, no-joy)

What to do now?? I've pulled CMOS battery, jumped JP1, etc. Just ain't nothin' happenin'!! 🙁

Thanks for the reply.

Any suggestions??

I see one currently on ebay for $55 + $10 shipping, but at that point, it's just not worth it. Might as well spend a few extra bucks & just get a whole new machine.

What exactly is it that goes on the motherboard when something like this happens???

my father's emachine's mobo ate it. the new replacement part was something like $125. went down to fry's and got him a new am2+ system for less than that with double the old amount of ram

Well, thanks to tcsenter for sending a replacement board promptly, etc. However, I can't believe this but the sucker still won't turn on. Not even a whisper of a single fan!!!

I even put the new PSU back just in case, but still no-joy!! 🙁

I'm down to just mobo, CPU and ram and still can't get a blip (except for the green LED on the mobo).

This one truly has me baffled!!! I'm totally stumped on this one!!

Try clearing/resetting the CMOS using the jumper (and check that the jumper is in the normal position). Make sure the 4-pin (ATX12V) CPU power cable is plugged.

If that doesn't work, it sounds like it could be the CPU or RAM. These components are far less likely to fail but they do fail, and at this point, process of elimination points to one of them as the likely culprits.

Wow!! Totally baffled! Put the CPU & Ram from my Dell 4600c (P4/2.4Ghz and 512 ram) into the e-machines & NOTHIN'!! Zip, Zilch, Nada!!

Soooo.....figured since I had 'em out, I might as well completely test the swap & put the e-machines stuff in my Dell. (The e-machines also had 512 ram but 2.8Ghz Celery) VOILA!!! I'm typing from my Dell 4600c w/ the e-machines CPU and RAM in it now.

I have no idea WTF is up with this ghostly e-machine. (confuzzled)

I even tried to jump-start the thing on the power-switch pins but no-dice. No flicker, no whimper, not a thing! Amazing. It's like the lights are on but nobody's home! 🙁

Check the monitor cable or connector that you are connecting to the eMachines. Are you using the same monitor between the eMach and Dell? If not, try swapping the monitors, too.

I've seen boards that would not POST because of some funky problem between the monitor and motherboard (with integrated graphics).

I was thinking about that stuff to, except I've even had it down to just the power-cord, & CPU & still nothin'.

My Dell had 2 sticks of ram in it so I kept swapping back & forth, but I figured worst case scenario, try removing all ram & see if I can at least get some fans spinning, but no-dice.

I'm almost thinkin' about trying a 3rd PSU just cuz I don't trust anything anymore. (I get the green LED on the mobo w/ both PSU's and the new PSU has a switch on it which will turn that green LED on/off but I don't trust that *that* means there's actually proper power running thru the mobo.

(confuzzizzled emoticon here)

is this your motherboard ? If so I have a pentium 4 motherboard that should drop in. I can check tonight and get the specs for ya. can't remeber the model number off hand but if it'll work pay the shipping and its yours. I also have a few video cards "older 4x and 8x agp stuff" I don't think the MB's I have include integrated graphic but I think I have one socket 478 board that does.

I remember some of these older P4 systems actually use a case fan to cool the CPU (through a duct) and connect that fan to the rear aux/case fan header instead of the CPU fan header. The aux/case fan header may need to have a fan plugged or it won't boot. Try both.

The board I shipped to him appears to be DOA. I apologize for all the trouble. I told redgtxdi that I would check to see if I had this board (was pretty sure that I did), and if so, test it before sending it out if he was interested. Upon finding it (I have something of a collection), I realized that I had just tested this board three or four months ago when someone else committed to buying it but bailed after agreeing on a price (they said they would send the money but I never heard from them again). It had been in an antistatic bag ever since, so I figured I didn't need to test it again. That was wrong.

Again, I apologize to redgtxdi for all the hassle you've gone through.

Well, no hard feelings here. I could have easily done the same thing. Back when I'd buy Fry's mobo/CPU combos building cheap systems, even those brand spankin' new boards would sometimes be DOA.

tcsenter was quick w/ communication, offered me help on the fly for troubleshooting this bizarre situation and shipped quickly in an honest effort to help me out so I definitely appreciate that.

Sometimes circuit boards win!

I'll tell ya' this much though, I'm gonna hang onto the board 'til the new store-bought board arrives just to be safe and if this thing still won't power up (for *whatever* reason at that point) I'm gonna tell the BIL, "Hey, I don't do EXORCISM!!!"
😛
