is there a competitor to E-Machines? I am beginnign to dislike E-Machiens the more I read about them, and each time I call them for info. For instance - they advertise a laptop - then say there are no vendors for it.

What laptop are you talking about? Search for the model number and you'll find it unless it was discontinued. Best Buy and Circuit City should have whichever one you're looking for.
No - emachines - instead of showing you the inventory of its reselelr - now just say their top two machine s- have no vendors that sell them. I think it has somethign to do with Gateway - having bought emachines - is nor introducing a new laptop with precisely the same specs as the M6810 at almost the same price. I am wonderign if emachiens will be selling laptops anymore if gateway is sellign the same spec'ed laptops.
The odds are that E is replacing its lappy line again which means all of your local retailers have sold out and are waiting to receive the new ones in.. The change lines about every 3 months or so...
They are a month late. Some rep told me they are waiting for Mid-November - possibly to amrket for C-Mas and wait fo component price drops. They new laptops are "secret." But Gateway - their owner - will be selling a clone of the 6810 and another one. Seem silly for emachines to market a slightly new line of laptops.
I think I will probably buy from ABS or ibuypower.com. At least they stock. The prices are about the same - with a *good* video card - just not 6 in 1 reader or a DVD R.
