E-Filing Prices

I'm not sure if this should go in Software or up in the sticky tax thread. But what's the cheapest place or software to go with to efile? Is TaxAct really free for everyone?

If your adjusted gross income is under 52 thousand, there are many places that do it free. As far as State filing, I only know Ohio, and it's free also.
If your income is higher, TurboTax is 15.00.

I have used TaxAct for last couple years. I plan on getting the $19.95 bundle again this year. Does Feds and State taxes.

I used esmarttax.com the past years, and i think it is free other than like a $8 transaction fee to deposit the $$ to your bank account.

So 19.95 is for software plus efiling fees. any fees for paying with credit card, or is is it straight checking accounts? how about refunds, no costs getting them is there?

It's ridiculous that it costs anything. It is saving the government a lot of money so it should not cost any more than 39 cents which is what it would cost me to mail it.

Just stay away from the boxed tax softwares. They charge you for the box then they charge you to Efile. What a freaking rip off.

Well actually the entire income tax system is a freaking rip off. Time for the national sales tax.

Yes, I agree. But I guess it doesn't matter what me or you think.

Vote yes for the FairTax.
If your elected crook doesn't like it, send him to the unemployment office.

I used TaxACT this year. Fed was free, State was $12.95. Fed accepted my e-filing the same day. Still waiting on State (filed on Saturday).

Don't think there is a fee for credit card (that's how I paid last couple years). I got my refund in about 7 days(direct deposit ftw) State taxes I think I mailed in last year since I owed them a small amount.

I used taxact. It was $10 for fed with help on itemized deductions, the basic Fed version is free. How they make up for it is by the greedy people. You can opt to pay with a credit card or if you want to pay for the cost of any of the upgrades from your refund, you can, but they charge an additional $15. Oh, I also found out that TaxAct is a product of HSBC, so most likely the info you provide them is sold to anyone that wants it.

No. $19.95 includes Federal plus State preparation and efiling. With a direct deposit option you can have your refund in about a week
