E-cigarettes are often touted as safer than traditional tobacco products, but according to a study released by the Harvard School of Public Health, they may still be extremely harmful to smokers’ health.

According to the study, 75 percent of flavored e-cigarettes and refill liquids tested contained the chemical diacetyl — a chemical that causes an incurable disease known as “Popcorn Lung.”

“Popcorn Lung,” otherwise known as bronchiolitis obliterans, causes scarring in tiny air sacs in the lungs that lead to excessive coughing and shortness of breath. “Popcorn Lung” earned its nickname in 2004 when several workers at a Missouri popcorn factory developed the disease.

Though diacetyl is often associated with buttering flavor used in popcorn, it’s also found in fruit and alcohol flavorings often used in e-cigarettes.

What’s even more disturbing is that diacetyl was found in a number of e-cigarette flavors that could appeal to children, like “Cotton Candy,” “Fruit Squirts” and “Cupcake.”

Forty-seven of the 51 e-cigarettes and liquids tested in the study contained diacetyl or a chemical that “may pose a respiratory hazard.”

“Since most of the health concerns about e-cigarettes have focused on nicotine, there is still much we do not know about e-cigarettes,” said study co-author David Christiani, Elkan Blout Professor of Environmental Genetics. “In addition to containing varying levels of the addictive substance nicotine, they also contain other cancer-causing chemicals, such as formaldehyde, and as our study shows, flavoring chemicals that can cause lung damage.”

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that turn flavored liquids and nicotine into vapor. In 45 of 50 states, e-cigarette use is not necessarily outlawed in otherwise smoke-free venues.

OH MY GODS, THINK OF THE CHILDREN

It would be nice if the FDA would do its job though.

Can't lie, that was my first thought too. I can see that we got all of the microwave popcorn off the shelves and alcohol off the racks due to their associations as well.

Oh, right.

In food products[edit]
Diacetyl and acetoin are two compounds that give butter its characteristic taste. Because of this, manufacturers of artificial butter flavoring, margarines or similar oil-based products typically add diacetyl and acetoin (along with beta carotene for the yellow color) to make the final product butter-flavored, because it would otherwise be relatively tasteless.[6]

In alcoholic beverages[edit]
At low levels, diacetyl contributes a slipperiness to the feel of the alcoholic beverage in the mouth. As levels increase, it imparts a buttery or butterscotch flavor.

In some styles of beer (e.g. in most beers produced in the British Isles, such as India Pale Ale), the presence of diacetyl can be acceptable or desirable at low or, in some cases, moderate levels. In other styles, its presence is considered a flaw or undesirable.[7]

Diacetyl is produced during fermentation as a byproduct of valine synthesis, when yeast produces α-acetolactate, which escapes the cell and is spontaneously decarboxylated into diacetyl. The yeast then absorbs the diacetyl, and reduces the ketone groups to form acetoin and 2,3-butanediol.

Beer sometimes undergoes a "diacetyl rest", in which its temperature is raised slightly for two or three days after fermentation is complete, to allow the yeast to absorb the diacetyl it produced earlier in the fermentation cycle. The makers of some wines, such as chardonnay, deliberately promote the production of diacetyl because of the feel and flavor it imparts.[8] Diacetyl is present in some chardonnays known as "butter bombs", although there is a trend back toward the more traditional French styles.[9]

Concentrations from 0.005 mg/L to 1.7 mg/L were measured in chardonnay wines, and the amount needed for the flavor to be noticed is at least 0.2 mg/L.[10][11]

Well, the popcorn workers were exposed to powdered diacetyl.
Diacetyl exists in higher levels in tobacco-filled cigarettes. Much higher.

But yes, I can't deny that the media sensationalism-riddled click-bait headline is technically correct in saying "E-cigarettes linked to incurable 'Popcorn Lung' disease" because there is diacetyl in some flavors.

link is blocked for me, do they list the brands they tested?

I went tbrough the pdf quick, and brands weren't identified. Looks to be flavor dependent moreso than brand. I'll read the full study later.

thanks.

would have been nice if they listed the brands.

We evaluated 51 flavors, including all available flavors from three large
cigarette companies (Brands A, B, and C, with 2, 2, and 7 flavors, respectively); 5 flavors from a
large independent e-cigarette company (Brand D); and 24 additional flavors from three ecigarette
distributors (Brands E, F, and G, 10, 8, and 6 flavors, respectively) that we selected

based on their potential appeal to children, teenagers and young adults (Table 2). In addition, we
evaluated 11 e-liquid flavors that are inserted into a cartomizer (disposable cartridge and
atomizer system) (Brands H and I, 6 and 5 flavors, respectively).

Before you roll your eyes you should make sure your scorn is heading in the right direction. Do you have any idea how much the corporate lobbyists have neutered the FDA? You want to get mad? Get mad at the money-before-all-else fuckheads who think the FDA should not be able to close down a meat plant when ecoli has been detected. This is the world they've created.

This is just another issue where the wrong people catch heat for the actions and agenda of the corporations. This isn't "think of the children!" so much as it is "think of the shareholders!"

The FDA does the job it's legally permitted to do, holding them responsible for what they do not control is stupid.

OK, I feel like Sheldon, but I am going to ask anyway since I don't know you at all: Sarcasm?

I'm reasonably convinced that the inhalation of diacetyl can lead to cancer whereas the ingestion of diacetyl is perfectly safe.

I see no reason not to make a super simple change in my life by buying flavors that are marginally less likely to cause me cancer.

This much more responsibly-written article was posted in the "CNN Demonizes Vaping" thread, and points out some places you can get your flavors from that have their juice tested.

My e-cig cartridges happen to be laced with THC and CBD's, so I doubt they'll have my brands :D

but thanks for the link anyway.
