A friend of mine has a '95 Geo Prizm that he was going to donate it to charity, but I'm thinking of buying it off him dirt cheap. It has 230k miles. I'm buying it because its manual and I can practice on it, and dont have to worry if I burn up the clutch or tranny. It failed inspection due to having a non-functioning E-brake. He got a quote for $350, anyone know if this sounds reasonable or if I can get it for cheaper and where at?

Really depends. It migth just be a rear brake job, adjustment, new cable, etc...

So easy to more costly. Hard to say until you find out whats really wrong.

What he said....

When you pull the Ebrake... can you hear the brake catch in the back? If not, cable may be stretched of broken. Also, when you pull the handle, is it very easy to pull or is there some tension?

The first thing you could do (other than manually checking the rear brakes) is take the console cover off near the brake handle and manually adjust the brake cable.
