I bought an item over the weekend from a powerseller with about 13,000 positive feedbacks. Today I got an email from them that they had "oversold" the item and would need to order one from the manufacturer to send to me. This could take several weeks. I checked their completed item history and they had only sold one of these, the one I bought. They had not "oversold" or miscounted, they clearly never had the item in stock in the first place. Apparently their sales strategy is to presell items and only then worry about acquiring stock to fill the orders. Is that acceptable according to e-bay and PayPal policies?

I don't think they are supposed to do that. The sad part is that they probably don't care that much. Sure, you might give a negative feedback, but they have 13,000 positive feedback and can just "reply" to your negative that you were wrong. People will continue to bid and buy from them anyway.

Someone with that many feedback is probably doing the business as an incorporated company. Go file a complaint with BBB. They'll get a letter.

Yeah, I know I can negative them, but as you've all suggested that won't hurt them very much. What I was hoping for is that there was some way to report this to somebody at e-bay or PayPal, somebody with clout that could smack them around for it.

One of ebay's rules is that you can't sell items that you don't immediately have in your posession (but as usual ebay fails to care most of the time, even when people blatently say "I don't have it but I'll get it.)

Give them a negative feedback just to piss them off, but basically you are getting the shaft because of the fact that ebay is too big to give a rat's ass.

eBay or Paypal is probably not going to care THAT much since this guy has tons and tons of transactions. This happens sometimes - it's not the end of the world.

lots of people do it, it's dropshipping.

as a buyer in that situation, I'd expect the option of an immediate full refund, and assuming that happened I'd move on and forget it.

Hey, that happened to me too. I bought an item from a powerseller with Thousands of possitive feedback too. I still haven't received the item. Then I checked the positive feedbacks and guess what? They all say the same things. Repeated feedback comments. There's about 6-7 statements, but they keep rotating those comments. Now why would Thousands of people leave similar or same comments.

My negative feedback is worthless compared to these. Geez.

Negative feedback for them - then IF they reply you can add YOUR reply (it is not easy to find - use ebay help). Plan your feedback(s) carefully so you can make the most of them.

Will your feedback matter? Most likely not - but you'll feel better.

I'd also write them.
