Dyson DC15 vs Bissell Healthy Home?

NFS4

No Lifer
I'm currently debating getting a refurbished Dyson DC15 from Amazon for $225 and selling my Bissell Healthy Home which is still new in the box.

I only bought the Bissell Healthy Home because I got it for $120 on clearance at Lowes a few months back and just bought it on a whim. However, I've read reviews saying that's its way too heavy and it loses suction pretty quickly. However, I now see it's selling on eBay for closer to $200 now and I could probably get around the same on Craigslist and not have to worry about PayPal/eBay fees.

I've heard nothing but good things about the DC15, but that could be because of all of the Dyson hype.

Anyone have any idea which would be the better vacuum on carpet and hardwood floors?

sorry this is a practical question. this has nothing to do with the empty headed momos that post here. you have to title your thread with nothingness a bit more and put some lame duck whimsical comments in your post otherwise..no response from the drool momos.

get the dyson. great vacuums, and that is a good price.

Bought the wife an animal hair dyson from Target last year. It was a target special, done in red and on clearence. Got it for like 319 when the normal animal hair dyson was like 449 right next to it.

Anyways we have used Bissel and Dirt Devils. They did an ok job but their quality pissed me off. They typically worked about 13-14 months then blew up. So I got her a dyson hoping it would last. Luckily it has worked flawless for over a year and picks up a lot more dirt, hair, and dust than the other two. I was really surprised at the difference in the amount of stuff it pulled up from our carpet. It isnt hype, they do a better job.

we've had our dyson for 5 yrs now, works just as well as the day i bought it and yes, all the hoovers and such i've purchased in the past never lasted more than a couple of years at a time.

There's a Dyson on Woot today.

Not sure if it's better than the one from Amazon though.

To add more to this post, I have read that one of the big complaints of most of these new vacuums are that the canisters are pretty small so you're always dumping them out.

Yeah, I talked to my dad about this very subject on Wednesday. He's trying to get me to buy his 20-year-old Kirby. I remember pushing that thing around when I was younger and forced to do chores. That thing is a BEAST. All-metal and damn near bulletproof. I think the only thing my dad has done to it over the years is oil it and replace the belt.

He bought a new Kirby and has been trying to get rid of the old one for some time.

The DC25 on Woot.com looks to be the top-of-the-line model. Only thing I don't like is that the collection bin looks to get smaller with each refresh. What's up with that? You make more powerful, better sucking vacuums, then give them smaller bins?

Do you have a canister vac now?

One thing I hate about the canister vacs is the mess they make when dumping them.

I always take a garbage can outside and dump into that, otherwise you're getting half of what you vacuumed up back into your home in airborne form.

Edit: Wow that same DC25 that's on Woot cost $449 on Amazon. Thats one hell of a deal on Woot it'd seem.

Dyson Animal works great. With 2 labs that thing gets a workout each day. Been going strong for 3 years now.

Yes, I currently have a Hoover Elite Rewind

Ah, I see the first drool momo has posted.

Personally, I feel that the Dyson vacs are over-rated and not worth the money. There are plenty of lower priced vacuums that will do just as good a job sucking dust out of your carpets.

That said, $225 isn't a bad price. Does the refurbished vac come with a warranty? If not, I'd be a little wary.

BTW-Why are you even considering this? You have perfectly good vacuum cleaner that you haven't even used yet sitting in a box for a few months. Do you vacuum your rugs quarterly or semi-annually? 😕

6 month Dyson warranty, Plus 2 1/2 year extended ABC warranty.

I bought the Bissell Healthy Home because my Hoover is crapping out on me. It barely sucks up anything anymore (even after me taking it apart and unclogging it). It has hardly any suction.

I was just trying to get by with my Hoover until I move into my new house May 1. I wasn't planning on taking the Bissell out of the box until then.

Well, you already own the Bissell. I don't see any reason to go out and get something else when you haven't even used the one you have.

I was talking with a vacuum repair guy a few years ago and he thought the Dyson vacs were over-rated and not worth the money. It's all marketing and there are plenty of people who've sucked it up like a...Dyson. 😉

Not sure about those negative comments on the Healthy Home - I've had mine for about 9 months and its awesome. Its heavier than a dyson but not outrageous by any stretch. I guess if I had a 2 story house it might be more concerned about it, but the vacuum is incredible compared to my old cleaners. $120 is a steal...I thought mine @$150 was nice.

Yeah, I moving into a two-story house -- hardwood downstairs, carpeted stairs, carpeted upstairs.

bought a dyson for gf for xmas 2 years ago. Been very happy with it since. Not a single problem with it either.

Nothing can touch the pure vacuuming bliss of a Dyson. Just get one. If heaven were to ever make a physical presence on earth, it would be a Dyson vacuum.

There's a very extensive thread on fatwallet about vacuums. The short story is: the Bissell Healthy Home and the Hoover Whisper have the same vacuum design as the Dyson DC 07 and DC 14. Only the DC 17 and DC 23 (IIRC) actually use significantly different vacuum designs. The DC 07 and DC 14 are basically the same (the DC 14 is a bit cheaper to produce), and the ball models tend to be a love or hate kind of deal.

I just had my Dyson Animal repaired because the clutch went out. It was 110 bucks to repair it but since I've had the vacuum for 7 years already it was worth it. The design of the clutch is a royal pain in the ass and if you don't have the tools, skills, or parts don't even bother. Talking to the vacuum repair guy, he said they were decent vacuums but a bit overpriced. The best vacuum he thought was a Panasonic bag vacuum. Same vacuum quality, much simpler design, easier and cheaper to repair if necessary since the design is simpler, but the cost was not that much different.
