Greetings,

I am in need of a diagnosis of my dyslexia. I need to be able to write my comps on a computer, as otherwise my writing is even WORSE incomprehensible garbage (right, can you imagine?).

I have no idea where to start: What kind of psychologist do i find? How much is this going to cost? What are the tests like? Will this scar me for life as a retard that shouldn't be employed?(not that I've not done that 100 other ways already)

If you have any experience with adult dyslexia please let me know about it.

Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration.

Doctor a see should you first.

I've been trying to find information online already, but I can't seem to figure out the above questions;

I do know what I've read has said it is not a medical problem, so much as it is a physiological psychological problem.

So, in specific, i need to know what kind of psych I should find.

Counseling or clinical psychologists do this kind of testing. Testing can be around 1000-1500. Usually they do intelligence and achievement testing to see if you have a learning disability.

Why do you want to be diagnosed? In most cases people only want to be diagnosed because they need services or support of some kind. (i.e. Testing time accommodations, writing aids, etc.).

Insurances generally cover this, or if you don't have insurance you can go to a school that has a psychology program (clinical or counseling).

I've got PhD comps coming up and the only way I'll be able to use a computer is if I can show that I am dyslexic.

Oh I thought comps were usually oral. It usually takes a while to get a diagnosis for dyslexia, best of luck.

8 hour written 4 hour verbal;

I make notes and practice before delivering a lecture; so an oral exam that involves board work can be problematic.

Dyslexia is hard; especially when it takes a long time to be diagnosed and it's too late.

There are several solutions and places out there that can help people overcome dyslexia. One of them is Reading Horizons, they have their own program and computer software for adult education. Dyslexia is one of the areas where it specializes.

Good luck.

you got me curious about it, so i put "dyslexia diagnosis" into the google. it led me to an info site, which said something about a "Dyslexia Testing Specialist" so i put that in. it was basically the same type of link, until i put "AZ" after it, for the state i live in. i got a list of centers that will test you for it. im thinking your google-fu sucks, that took me less than 2 minutes to come up with.

Dyslexia can be hard on people. My brother dropped out of school because the teacher told him he couldn't learn . This was over 30 years ago and at that time it was not understood. Don't get upset about it, do like you are doing now and try to address the problem by finding someone who can help. A lot of the time people sit and worry rather than acting and the worrying will not go away till something is done.

My brother is now very successful. He still struggles with writing but he is proof that doesn't have to hold you back.

that or when I put that into googles for Texas, where I live, I get things from Houston (6hours away) San Antonio/Austin (5hours away) Dallas (10 hours away) and El Paso (13hours away).

When I use Google maps I don't get anything within a 200 mi radius.

So I'm looking for the kind of psychologist that might be able to do this but not be a "Dyslexia Testing Specialist"; because I don't exactly have one of those near by.

Thank you; I'm trying to knock out a PhD now and this is the first time since elementary that I've not been able to simply work with the people involved, but instead they are requiring a documented diagnosis.

Your dyslexia is caused by your "dixy-fever."

Once you accept that DLR was a terrible governor, you'll start to see things more clearly. :p

good luck, i cant see why a specialist would want to live in the middle of nowhere texas as opposed to a large city

forget a specialist, is there a decent sized town nearby with *any* psychologists that youve tried to deal with? surely one of them would have some ideas about what to do and who can help

This.

I spoke with my wife (she is a licensed clinical psychologist/behaviorist) and she said the same thing. Any psychologist can point you in the right direction, any many types of psychologists can actually do the tests you need.

Do you have a family General Practitioner that you go to?

Call him and ask. That's where to start.

<-- Dyslexic

It's a day-by-day struggle, I know. Good luck bud :)
