My computer had 2 hd's in it
then it fell
i salvaged everything including the drives which were working (hooked them up and could access everything)
when i got back to school, i had a problem and ended up RMAing the motherboard (got back the same kind)
now, i cant access my 2nd drive
in computer management, it says dynamic disk, unreadable
i tried converting to basic - nothing
tried norton - nothing
not sure what to do short of reformatting which i dont want to do just yet b'c i want the data on the drive
any help?

Quoting from that site
Converting dynamic disks to basic disks. After you convert a basic disk into a dynamic disk, you cannot change the dynamic volumes back to partitions. Instead, you must move or back up your data, delete all dynamic volumes on the disk and then convert the disk

You killed the data already.

Converting from Dynamic back to basic would wipe out any and all info on it. That conversion is a one way process right now. You can go from Basic to Dynamic, but not back.

Why did you make it Dynamic in the first place? did you acutally use the features assosiated with it?

i dont remember ever changing it to dynamic in the first place
ok, so converting to basic will wipe the data but why cant i access the data now?

is there any tool to access the data from a dynamic disk?

But it didn't convert to basic
It still says dynamic
whenever i try to convert to basic my cursor changes to hourglass for a couple secs then its over
right now, its still unreadable dynamic

Do you have an option to import foreign disks?

If not, you might want to look into data recovery tools that will work with dynamic disks.

I remember it not recognizing one of my disks a while back and ithink i imported foreign or activated the disk toget it to work

under tasks there is only properties and convert to basic disk

running win xp pro with all updates installed

No applicable here but for future reference you can convert dynamic volumes to basic volumes without any data loss using Acronis Partition Expert, its available HERE
