Dynamic ip question.

If I use a dynamic ip does the ip remain as long as the computer is up? In other words will I have the same ip as long as i dont shut down. Just some info this is not a cable/dsl connection (running Win2k). This is a school network the computer being inside one of the school buildings.

It depends. My Road Runner changes my IP every few weeks, even if I leave my computer on. When I attended college the dorms rooms were wired, and while everything was done with dhcp, I was leased the same IP the entire year. The people that would know the best would be your CIT or help desk staff, but I dont know if they would be reluctant to tell you, since they may want to know why you need a static IP.

Im runnin Apache on the computer(might switch to IIS) and was also planning to run an FTP server. Ny recommendations for the FTP server?

also since it is dynamic and for some reason I have to reboot is there anyway I can redirect to the new ip address?

OK now I can answer some of your questions but not all. If you have dynamic IP then just go sign up for dynamic DNS services. One that I use is [l]www.dyndns.org[/l] register a name something like imhotepmp.dydns.org and there's a client where you run on your comp and everytime that it detects IP change it'll update DNS and forward to your IP. For FTP server I'd recommend G6 best server I've ever use. PM me if you need G6.

Do you even know what you're talking about Sammy? Do you think every ISP is gonna assign static IP for their subscriber?

imhotepimp: It all depends on how the DHCP server is configured. For most LAN's, the server will allow the workstation to keep the IP as long as it wants, but that usually isn't the case with ISP's. They probably re-assign you a new IP each time the lease is up, or whenever you request another one.

However, this isnt' an ISP, it's a college with the computer on the network. Most of the time they will keep even dynamic IP's assigned to the same computer unless you take it down for a long time. Even then, some don't, they just use dhcp for ease of not assigning two different people the same static, but in a sense it ends up becoming a static even though it is dynamically assigned.
