my large seagate 750gb drive was working perfectly.

i installed a new 4870 card after cleaning out my ati drivers in safe mode using drivercleaner.

the card works fine but now my Dynamic Disk the seagate is shown as offline and failed in disk management.

my mobo sees it fine. in device manager it shows the drive as working fine and enabled.

what the heck?

man i put this in a dual sata enclosure i have setup for my gf and it wouldnt see the drive.

converted it to basic and lost some movie data. didnt have the money to backup all my movies. all my music and personal data is redundant at least, this was just my fun drive.

and all my pr0n is gone :D

Had a rough time last night with my rig with 4 gigs mem and the radeon 4870. I removed 2 gigs and reladed vista and now it works fine. Wondering if there is a memory issue with the video card?

im runnin xp pro so it only sees 3 gigs of my 4 gigs ram. my 3870 also had 512 ram so not sure why the 4870 would have an issue since it has the same, just ddr5

Well, I purchased the 4870 about 2 weeks ago. I then updated last friday to 4 gigs in the machine. The system has been working fine up until yesterday. At first I thought a virus got through even though I had avast loaded. What happened on the machine yesterday is that it rebooted after I started the machine. the video card started spinning right afterwards and kept on running. I turned off the machine and rebooted. It did the same thing again but this time after the reboot there was a boot error. I so then thought that there may of been a hard drive issue where I reworked my raid and then reloaded vista. After the reload and was loading the updates the system rebooted again. This time I switched the 74 raptors to single disks and put the xp disk in and noticed that the second drive still had 5 partions on it so erased those and formatted the drive. Then set them back to raid and reloaded vista. the system again rebooted. I thought about what I've done with the system and that was the video card and the memory. Removed two sticks of corsair pc800's and reloaded vista and so far it works fine after the vid drivers, sound and updates. So i'll be replacing the memory sticks tonight to see if that memory is no good. If so I'll run mem test on them. Then if they are good I'll try placing the 2 gigs back in and see what happens.

Did you have a specific reason for choosing to make the drive a Dynamic Disk? If you follow these forums, you see frequent problems with Dynamic Disks disappearing. I don't recommend using Dynamic Disks unless you know exactly why you are doing so and have reviewed Microsoft's articles on managing Dynamic Disks.

yeah i encountered such warnings after doing an hours worth of googling on my issues today.

this drive will be maintained as a basic disk from now on. im done with dynamic.

but upgrading a video card, which ive done before with this drive on, did not seem at the time to be a risky endeavour for my hard drives.

Well so far I switched the 2 one gig sticks back in with no appearent problems so far. I'll be adding back the the memory populating all 4 spots again to see what happens.
