DYNAMAT is a waist of money!!!

I just spent like $40 on dymamat because 2cooktek said it took the sound down a lot in his case. so I tried it and did it all the way he said but I cant even tell if I nice a different. The only thing I notice is the 5lbs it added to my case's weight.

I've helped friends use it in the cars for quite some time. Always seems to work well in those situations.

Dynamat cuts vibration not sound! If you want more of a sound absorbing material use Dynaliner MAX.

Hehe lemme rephrase that dynamat was design to cut vibration, it may cut down sound a little but its not what it was designed for. When looking at projects when lining cars with this stuff would be done in 2 layers...first the dynamat to cut vibration and slap dynaliner on top of that to cut down sound. Ya know i think 2cool make a boo-boo using dynamat, might make a difference for him cause hes got alota fans in his system and he eliminated the vibration.

So, anyone know a cheap place to get Dynaliner/Dynaliner Max, or a generic equivalent?

You should've use some generic stuff from MCMASTER pornsurfer you would've been wasting $5 instead of $40. hehe

Dynamat isn't very good, and when your case gets hot, Dynamat gets really smelly.

Here's an older thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/arcmessageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=140497

Mineral-filled vinyl mastic. Get it from McMaster-Carr, and industrial Supply house: http://www.mcmaster.com/and search for item 9709T26. It's a 24" x 54" sheet and costs $22.50 US. Plan on using two layers worth for maximum sound reduction and have enough to cut fan gaskets to further quiet your case.

Good Luck!!

I have to agree that dynamat is awful stuff. it slowly oozes down the inside of your case over a period of months eventually making it look like crap since it leaves a thin black residue. This stuff sucks.

I build speaker enclosures and have found roofing shingles to deaden sound just about as well as Dynamat, and it's cheap enough to double-layer. I use Liquid Nails in speaker boxes, but that would probably be a bit messy in a puter case 😛

And besides, Dynamat works better for low freq (vibrations=bass), not fans (which are high-pitched). A better alternative for fan noise would be something like that puke-yellow foam egg-crate stuff you can get rolls of for putting under bedsheets (what the heck is it called?!). That stuff doesn't have any smooth surfaces (unlike Dynamat), so it will not just reflect "unwanted high freqs", it will absorb them. That would be a bit trickier to put in a case tho cuz it's about an inch thick. Maybe the thin stuff would work OK??? I would love to run some dB tests on some of that stuff, but my SPL meter doesn't read below 70dB 😛
