Greetings,
today I received my new case. a Thermaltake Armor Extreme Edition. I just got finished swapping all my components and attempted to boot the PC and got nothing. No post at all. At first I thought it might just be as simple as my video card, but after changing that out, it did the same thing. I noticed there was a mounting screw that I hadn't put a screw in through the motherboard and in this particular area, the motherboard had no insulation from the case. So I took out my mobo and removed that screw. Success, it posted. So, I put my 8800 back in in place of the 6800 I used to check the POST thing. All of a sudden, wouldn't post anymore. I fooled around with the motherboard and changed the screws to make sure they were all tightly down. After doing this, I attempted to boot the PC again. Nothing. No POST. So, I took the power plug out of the PSU and flipped it off. I decided to try one more time before tearing the thing apart in frustration. Well, I turned the power switch back on (on the PSU) and hit the power button. Nothing happened. I remembered I'd left the thing unplugged, so I plugged it in.
Here's where my question comes in: When I plugged it in, a few sparks shot out of the male plug on the PSU. I promptly unplugged the PSU and switched it off again. I replugged it in and flipped it on and now all I hear is some sizzling and sparking from the PSU.
So essentially, two questions: Did I fry my PSU or was it on it's way out already? As well, if it was dying, could this be the cause of my no boot?
As well, I have a Fortron 400W PSU sitting around here so I'm going to put that in and see what happens. Will that be enough for my 8800GTS, or should I switch back to the 6800 and stick with it until I get another PSU?
As well, the PSU that fried was an Antec Trupower 2.0 550W
