dyd playback looks crummy on LCD

got a 24" Gateway LCD, when I play movies back with PowerDVD they look pretty grainy, noticably worse then on my television. If I buy an XBox 360 HD DVD drive will it play DVD's upconverted on my LCD? I'd like to have my dvd's looking as good as possible.

what video card are you using? do you have windvd that is supposed to look better as well.

I can't find the other links i know of for upscaling stuff, but that should get you steered in the right direction.

FFDShow + whichever player you want to use will help things out a bit.

Dunno for sure about the Xbox upcoverting, but i don't think it does.

good link, I think I might just end up buying a standalone DVD player and hooking it to the LCD's input. I will fiddle around with FFDShow and see what I can accomplish.

It just looked like how to get players to use ffdshow... which when you install should default to it anyways. Doesn't really seem like image quality improver guide.

FFDShow is not going to make a crappy picture look good. Your dvd should look good out of the box with FFDShow making improvements. Work on your DVD playback first, then look at FFDShow.

what is your Video card, I see you are using powerdvd (try windvd which is supposed to be superior). Also, are you sitting pretty darn close? A standalone player should not look better then a computer playing a DVD on an LCD monitor.

well I'm at work so I can't test the guide out, but it looks like it bumps the IQ up to where you're seeing powerDVD run @ 720p'ish resolution. I am not hopeful it will magically make my DVD's look good, but if it can, then I don't have to buy a standalone DVD to do the same thing - I would be happy!

I believe most DVDs are interlaced, so compared to an interlaced CRT they won't look good. Also LCDs reveal more flaws, especially high contrast ones. Give HD-DVD and Blu-Ray a shot for a real test or upscale DVD with ffdshow to get more satisfactory standard definition results.

that's what I'm after, my GF's Toshiba upconverting DVD on her Westy 27" LCD, movies look beautiful! This Gateway LCD can push 1080p resolution so I should be able to get the same results, guess buying a 80 dollar dvd player and hooking it to the composite input isn't a big deal.

Don't use composite, use component at the least. DVD quality via software player is going to depend a lot on the quality of the DVD also. Some of my DVDs look great, some look like poop. WinDVD 7 looks a bit better than PowerDVD 6, but I'll try some of those tweaks and see if there's much difference. Also need to check out Creative's DVD player and see how that looks.

Upscaled DVD should look better though hands-down. One thing I can't stand about software DVD players is that they don't give you 1:1 1080, they give you a letterbox within a letterbox if you run 1:1. Pretty sure an Upscaler auto crops and pan and scans the image. You can do Pan and Scan on a software DVD player at 2.35:1 to fill 1920x1200, but it crops a good part of the image. Anyways, main reason I feel upscaled external DVD players look better is because I've seen a lot of older/obscure movies on HD cable in 1080 and they look fantastic. Perfect 1920x1080 too ofc.
