Whenever I open a video file, it makes a small txt file in the same folder. I have been wondering about this for years. Any suggestions?

Not the most helpful answer, but google links. I never had this problem until making my new PC a few months ago. I think I solved the problem by updating either the .net MS update and/or updating to Wndows MP 11(even though I use media player classic and VLC).
