I've got a GF4Ti4200. My system (WinXP Pro) has the default DX installed. I'm thinking of installing DX9. Will I notice any difference in speed or quality?
I think the major and maybe the only difference between DX8 and DX9 is the OpenGL/Direct 3D functionality that is not supported on earlier video cards. So yes, its completely pointless to have direct DX 9 with a ti4200.
Yes, install DX9a. There's more to an update than new features. Bug fixes mostly, but there's always performance boosts. (Yes, that means you have to update to DX9-compatible nVidia drivers too.)
Like the other guy said, "aint broke, don't fix it" . Thats why they came out with 8.1a DX anyway. And the ti4200 hardware itself does not support the functions of DX9. Even if you did run a DX9 game on the ti4200 the framerate would be 5-10fps if the game played at all !
Edit: However if the game promts you to have DX9 then have it install it. Even though some games or programs don't really use DX9 they will promts you to have it.
