DX9 Final Out

Heh, and I just bought a Radeon 8500 64MB. Oh, well. Who needs more than 80 FPS in UT2k3! Hahahaha... 🙁

Many thanks. I had been looking all over the Microsoft web site for this, even in the OEM and system builder section with no luck. A big help since I install it on so many machines. Thanks again. And the download is coming real fast, much better than ATI's site but everyone is probably getting a heavy hit load today.

No Problem 🙂

This isn't gonna destroy my computer, is it?

It shouldn`t do,what I did was disable anti-virus and firewall before install and everything went smooth with the install,I`ve tested some games etc and they were fine.

So what good will this do you if you don't have a video card optimized for dx9 or, for that matter, any games that take advantage of dx9?

You`ll have to install it sooner or later, plus it`s free so no harm installing it now 😉.

🙂

Well I installed it. Not that I care that much, but after installation my 3dm 2001SE went from 12021 to 10190 with my geforce4 ti4400. So I guess the next step is to buy a dx9 optimized video card? I don't see much difference otherwise.

lol talk about falling victom to the lure of marketing!

seriosly dx9 comeing out is no reason to need a dx9 videocard, now if there were a dx9 video game and you realy liked it then it might be a good idea. however if you do have some money to burn and would like a faster video card ati has some realy nice dx9 parts. 😉

Well I've come full circle on this. After disregarding common sense on installing something that has no current practical benefit I..... installed dx9 after reading it didn't do any harm and I was getting a 9700 pro anyway; immediately saw a drastic decrease in 3dm2001se points with my ti4400 (still installed until this evening when I will put in the 9700 pro) along with some stuttering in MOHAA and including a freeze in the game at a critical point that no amount of tweaking fixes; reinstalled the 41.09 dets after completely uninstalling them - fixed the 3dm2001se that has increased from the earlier number before the install of dx9 (is now 12540 instead of the earlier 12021 with dx8.1 at stock speeds) and the stuttering; still getting the freeze at a critical spot in MOHAA when a motar shell explodes - first problem with dx9 and sound. Now I'm reading all the horror stories everyone is having with the dx9 and catalyst 3.0 drivers that I had planned to intall with this card when it got here and I'm wondering.......
Do you think it better that I resign myself to reinstalling xp to get back dx8.1 and go with the 2.5 cats or do you think I should still give the 3.0 and dx9 combo a try ?
Anyway, pretty demos are nice, but like 3dmark2001, playing them is not why I buy a video card. Performance, great graphics and stability count the most. This is my first major move from Nvidia in 4 years and I don't want to end up wishing I hadn't changed.

9700 Pro + DX9 + Cat. 3.0 = all good here. No problems so far. The DX9 demos and screensaves are awesome (check out the bacteria in a dark room!).

I tested opengl with jedi knight 2 and D3d with Mafia. Both were fine.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't pan out, I can reformat - no big deal.
I had to laugh when I read your system specs, skibby9. I know what you mean about "Frankenstein". My system started out as a super7 amd k6 unit and has changed over the years at least 6 times. The keyboard is the oldest part on this rig of mine...... it's an old IBM ps2 from the first 386 machine I had ever bought. Best keyboard around IMHO.

Well, it don't look good. Installed the card (did a complete purge of the old ti4400) and I got the stutterring in ogl games along with a total freeze in 3dm2001se. I'll run the demos once and then it looks like reformat time.

check out the forums at rage3d.com . They have addressed the stuttering issue many, many times. It sucks that some people are having this problem, but I can tell you that I have not experienced anything like this at all. Slide me a pm if you are having trouble finding a solution, filmore.

Haha, my main rig is sort of like that. The IDE cables, floppy drive, modem, keyboard, and zip drive are all from the original Cyrix 233MHz system that I had back in the old days. 😉
