whats the point of getting a dx9 card? why not get a ti 4800 for less $ but more frame rates? and will a dx9 card be a requirement for doom3/half life 2?

It depends on what DX9 card you're talking about... there's 9 or 10 on the market right now.

May I direct you here to learn more about video cards and the advantages some have over others.

It won't be a requirement, unless you want all of the eye candy and still have a playable game. Without hardware DX9 support, there goes your frame rate in games that have DX9 features. Which I'm pretty sure D3/HL2 will have plenty of.

im talking about weather its better to get a radeon 9600 pro or a geforce 4 ti 4800. ive seen some doom 3 requrement list with the 9600 in the minimal req category, and 4400/4600 (im assuming they mean 4800 too) in standard. also the ti's do better than the 9600 in benchmarks, so with a comparable price, and as long as a dx9 card isnt a requirement, id probably do better with a 4800.

yeah, pretty much. If you turn off all the dx9 features such as pixel and vertex shaders, the 4800 would best the 9600. However, if you turn on AA or AF at all the 4800 would quickly fall far behind the 9600. It really just depends on what is important to you, and it sounds like you have already worked this out.

lol, this is kinda weird. i dont want to start a flame war or anything but why is 5800 in the optimal and 9700 in the standard group. also, i think the 9600 pro when overclocked will easily be in the standard group
