DX8: A Tale of Woe

sigh....
So I decided I'd be Mr Cool and install det 7.17.....
Ok, det 7x works ok, gave me a slightly better 3dmark score. Did not notice any instabilities.
So being Mr. WiseAss I stick on DX8. Restart ok, but it tells me all my directX files are expired.... ok, ill restart in safe mode and run dxuninstall.
Not gonna happen... no restart in safe mode, no restart normal, no restart.
OK, lets format.
Formatted c:, went to install windows again, and when it goes to start copying files over, LOCK UP. The only thing I can think of is that my dying IDE cd-rom finally went south. Se here I am, about to buy a new cd-rom, and praying that windows will install when i get home.

I'm not sure I follow you, Locutus. You don't install beta software because it might anger the hardware gods who will then take it out on your CDROM?

Besides if the CDROM was so close to failure that an installation of Windows caused it to bomb, it wouldn't have lasted much longer in any case.

Who knows, maybe nVidia put in a function in the 7.17 drivers to kill every 1000th user's CD-ROM drive? They might as well, they love releasing half-written drivers and watching the 3D freaks go nuts over it...

Well there it wasn't all so bad was it? You got to spend a little money, the salesperson got to make a healthy commission off you, and now you have a new drive! ... errr... j/k
