DX8.1 + GF4 + D3D games = disaster

I got my PNY GF4 Ti 4600 about a month ago. When I played D3D games I noticed major texture blurs, tears, and sparkles. Text would smear, textures would be left unshaded, everything looked like a disco. In other words, D3D games are UNPLAYABLE. I found the quickfix solution to this shortly after. Simply pull out DX8.1 and put 8.0a back in, and all the problems go away. Of course, I can't play DX8.1 games now :)

I mostly play OpenGL games anyway (quake 3 engine), but I had a couple friends over and we were wanting to play a few DX 8.1 games. Well, I was going to stay away from it, but I figured hell, nvidia probably has some updated drivers out that fix this problem. I install DX 8.1 and go get the newest nvidia refs, and I still have this problem.

Anyone else in the same boat? I've read about quite a few people having this problem on Dungeon Siege forums, but I have yet to see any bitching anywhere else.

If you are playing Dungeon Siege, either turn off FSAA or use 4X. Quincunx and 2X don't work with it.

That's not the problem...I'm aware of that problem. This is DX8 games in general. I first notice3d it in Dungeon Siege because that was the first DX 8 game I played after I got my GF4. This texture/text/glitter crap makes most games unplayable. I've tried every option from low textures, vertex lightning, no shadows, low resolutions, no fsaa...everything...all D3D games are fvcked up

Of course, the superior API, OpenGL never has a problem.

Do you have the latest chipset drivers and BIOS for you system?
Any overclocks?

Also it might be heat related - check your inside case and video card temps.
