dx7 games slow on dx9!!!

i have project igi and homeworld - which i think are all direct x 7 and after i installed direct x 9 + cat 3.0 on a radeon 9700pro, the game is very slow - sometimes (every 5 secs) the framerate drops to 2/s! At other times it is ok. On dx 8.1 all was fine.

by the way, the processor is a p3 1ghz, 512 pc 133, 80gb WD first edition.

maybe you shouldnt have installed dx9 in the first place since there are no games yet which supports it. In my personal opnion, dont download directx coz it bundled with our games. Unless you REALLY want to play a demo game that needs it. Anyway I dont know if this problem is experienced by most users..

Also, it could just be your CPU choking to feed the 3d pipeline (1Ghz is slow by today's gaming standards).

i know - but these two were meant to be run on a p2 300mhz - and as i mentioned, they started shuttering after i installed directx 9 - before all was fine. directx 8 games like war3, hitman 2, unreal 2003, commanche 4 and more all run flawlessly @ 1240x1024x32.

When in the upgrade did you install dx 9.0???

With something like that you need to totally and I mean totally remove ati drivers and have the pc redetect it as a standard vga adapter. Then install the dx 9.0...reboot...then install the new cat 3.0's....

With ATI it is all about installation procedure....

I think some driver is corrupted...all dx versions are backwards compatable so ther should be no issues. heck I have had dx 8 for 1 year plus and I owned no games for dx 8 yet no issues....

yeah dx9 drivers dont really like dx7 games.

i have needforspeed: porche edition.
60 something frames max. with radeon9500pro.

You can't really. The two main ways are to use system restore or to reinstall Windows.

It sounds like your problem is a 60 Hz refresh rate coupled with vsync.
