DX11

I know I might be getting ahead of myself with this one, but I'm curious: What will DX11 bring to the table that we don't already have? What version of Windows will it come with?

I assume this thread is pure speculation, as that is what I'm going to type.
I don't know what we don't already have. Unless it is fully optimized and easy to develop on, there's not a whole lot DX10 can't accomplish at this time. Well, the Carmacks of the world will continue to prove us wrong. 😉

It'll come bundled with a holographic signature from Bill Gates.....all for the bargain price of $1,500.

yep, the Enterprise uses DX10 for their Holodeck 200 years from now
😛

😀

Maybe we'll see an integrated physics API in DX11. I know there are other solutions like Havok already, but that wouldn't stop M$ from pursuing that venue. Also maybe it will have more fetures specifically targeting GPGPU programming. But since I program in OpenGL for many reasons, I'm not so much concerned about the technical aspects of DX. Also, DX9 was in no way used to it's full potential yet, we just need more powerful hardware.

There was a nice discussion thread in here a month ago where people made some nice predictions on 'what could be the next big graphical features that make their way to video games'.

The 'search' function sucks donkey genitals so I'm unable to find it. 🙁

Quote from the end of that article I posted.

"I think you'll see DX10-only in the next two years, certainly. That's about as close as I can pin it, because part of it is going to depend on adoption and installed base of DirectX 10 hardware. "

here you go Text

i see in that discussion the question if Toy Story could be rendered now on an 8800GTX sli system in *real time*

of course 😛

Final Fantasy: SW the movie was rendered on the 7800 series in *real time* --albeit a bit slow ... and on the 6800 series before it and with r300 [but painfully slow]

forget the *render farm* nonsense of 12 years ago ... that was dog crap slow

A DX11 in tandem with the next gen video card; I think it will be able to cook frozen food or warm left overs like a Microwave does.

A new name perhaps? DirectXI

Well, don't forget... the 8800GTX does render that porn star in real time. I ran it on my PC and it ran kinda poorly, although I was forcing 16x Quality AA and 16x Quality AF at the time, which I'm QUITE sure the original program did not ask for 😉.

that porn star had far more detail than any scene in Toy Story 😛

i don't think people realize how far programing and HW has progressed in 12 years

Yeah, that is a pretty good point. We don't even know what DX10 is going to offer anyways.
Oh well, speculation is always good.
