TBH most of those screen shots didnt look amazingly better (except the house) but i think they were too low resolution to really see that much detail increase

I think being in the game though things will be a different story and im really excited for this technology; The helmet in stalker is so much smoother... and stuff like that really helps add to the immersion of stuff

How much of a performance hit are we looking at for tess on/off?

There is supposed to be little to no performance hit for having tessellation enabled.

Damn! im really excited for this then; thats an amazing visual change for <10% performance hit

Well its something that was overdue... Games have had sharp edges for so long, about time there is a technology to round things up :p

Although DX11 again seems more performance oriented... I wonder when we will see an image quality jump like DX7 > DX8 (all hail the shaders!)

GF100 has SW tessellation. It remains to be seen how much performance goes down.

I don't think we will see another jump like that for a long time. Ray/Ras hybrid some day. Maybe. Gonna be mostly geometry and performance. Throw in some physics. Eyefinity type stuff. I think a lot of people are of the mind that the graphics we have now are pretty close to the "good enough" stage.

Still long way to go to catch movies.

Well i think performance goes hand in hand with quality.... If you can run crysis "maxed" out at 500 fps; then you can definitely drop some LOD add draw distance ect... now ur back down to 60

Hell i can bring farcry 1 down to ~100 fps custom quality on a 4890.... looks WAY better than what the in game options will let you change

The amount of tessellation can be adjusted on the fly in a game based on your hardware specs, and for draw distance type functions. Whether or not all games will implement it that way is to be seen.

You can download some old non DX11 Tessellation demo's there to get a small idea of how it works.

Not only does it tessellate a mesh, but from there you can also use the displacement maps to actually deform the mesh smoothly now that you have enough geometry filled in using tessellation. It's quite a handy feature.
