I'm gonna pick up a new video card soon, probably either a 8800gt or 8800gts (g92).

Do either of these support dx10.1? How important is that? If they don't, is it worth holding out for?

No they don't.
not important at all.
no its not.

(there was a suggestion that 10.1 would bring performance improvements but after what they said about dx10 I think we can discard that)

I think directx 10.1 is a wait and see. We havent even found any games that take good advantage of direct X 10.0 without poor performance from even using it.

DX10.1 basically adds "bicubic sampling" or something like that. or was it filtering... It is supposed to be a somewhat more efficient method of doing something. It also REQUIRES that the card support 4x MSAA (they all do anyways)

DX10.1 is ONLY supported by the HD38XX series and requires vista SP1. It will then require drivers and for games to actually include it. So far game makers have indicated they aren't going to. And nvidia also doesn't seem to plan on supporting it on any of their stuff. So it will be going straight to DX11.

I think DX 10.1 is supposed to add a 10mb video buffer on the video cards, offering a free 4x AA, like the xbox 360

DirectX 11 will probably be out in like 2012 if they continue at the rate they've been at... i remember back when they constantly updated, it went form DX5 to DX8 in like 1.5 yrs lol

Well, they should slow down, give the hardware time to catch up and software to be written for it. Hardware that can run DX10 fast still isn't available. We went through similar when DX9 was launched and the first DX9 cards were pathetic at it.

Regular directX10 is a non factor as it is now and likely won't be for a while yet anyway, so the 10.0 vs 10.1 issue is a non factor from where I sit.

NVidia has said it won't support DX10.1 but wait for DX11. It this is truly the case (let's see how GT200 is in that regard...) There won't be many games developped for DX10.1 if it isn't supported by NVidia
