DX10 video cards won't work unless you have vista?

i have read some worrying posts about how DX10 video cards won't work with XP and I don't plan to upgrade to vista anytime soon so should I just buy a DX9 video card now?
 
DX10 is Vista only.

However the DX10 capable cards are likely to be superb performers in DX9 programs on XP so still represent a possible upgrade path.
