Any news on the DX10 mobile video cards? I am going insane with the wait... Seems like they are taking their sweet time. I am looking to replace my three year old laptop, but I don't want to replace it with tech that debued 11 months ago. It would be nice if they standardized those MXM cards. Then I would buy one now, and just upgrade to a newer MXM DX10 video card down the line... But, without certainty, seems a dumb thing to do.

I read not to long ago that MSI demoed their MXM G84/86 cards, dubbed the Mobile 8500 and 8600. Had a picture of it and everything...

*waits not so patiently*

1) MXM cards are a nice idea, but they don't allow for thinner notebooks since you have to have a slot for the GPU and not just soldered to the board. Also, the manufacturer would need to provide the appropriate BIOS for the mainboard in order to support a new GPU.
2) DX10 mobile cards should be coming soon enough. The Intel Centrino Pro (Santa Rosa) will be coming out within the next month or two, where the integrated graphics (X3000) will be DirectX10 compliant, once Intel releases the appropriate driver for it. As far as AMD and Nvidia releasing cards, they will probably be released around the same time as the Centrino Pro platform.

I had read that the MXM cards had their own BIOS and therefore wouldn't need to have a BIOS update to support them.

The GMA X3000 (3000 for mobile) currently is a horrible chip and there isn't any reason to believe it will be *much* better. Currently, GMA950 is faster in most tasks, which is a shame.

that could possibly be driver related though, right?

Yeah, it is driver related. But I wouldn't expect much more than 33% improvement over GMA950 anyway... Sure, that might be a decent percentage jump, but 33% over 5 frames per second is, what? 7? :D Don't get me wrong, I wanted to the X3000 to succeed, I just don't see it happeneing. I really desire a decent intergrated solution, it just does not exist yet.

Where did you see numbers to support this? Been looking (though not too hard) without much luck for hard numbers on the new onboard graphics chips.

Sadly, integrated ATI or nVidia graphics would trounce Intel's offerings, and even they are crap for any 3D games or work.

Intel's offerings are good for power saving... they're certainly not very powerful chips...

and i hate how so many notebook manufacturers are content to just use the GMA without any upgrade options in most of their lines
