hello, i m intrestead in buying a new mid range ( 1500 $) computer for my work (video editing).
thing is i m not sure if i shuld wait till the new mid range (250 $) dx-10 Graphics Card will be availible in two months (?) or shuld i just jump in and buy me a X1950 pro now?

I don't believe DX-10 is required for video editing. It is part of Vista. But, if it is really a must, why not buy a new machine with Vista bundled?

You dont even need an intense card for editing... Its all rendered already... Unless your working with h.264 stuff (I seriously doubt it) even a GeForce 4 would work 😛 You certainly dont need an X1950 pro.

thnx for the answers.
corkyg if i understand correctlly ur advise is to wait a couple of months till vista (and dx10) comes out?
thecoolnessrune video editing requires some rendering in terms of encoding into mpag2 and some times even mpag4, there are some effects which are needed to be rendered also. arent those things rely on a strong Graphics Card?

DX-10 cards are already available

8 series from Nvidia

I've heard they are going to release some lower end cards from the 8 series

for video editing I don't think you would need a gaming card anyways

Nope, for video rendering, your videocard does very little. A TNT2 card could probably get you by. You want a fast processor, and plenty of RAM.

What program will you be using for rendering?
I have a Core2Duo, think it's the E6400 model. I use Virtualdub and Ulead Videostudio - neither seem to make much use of the dual processors. They never exceed 50% CPU usage, though there is one caveat with this. For Virtualdub, I do encoding to Xvid or Huffyuv. Xvid doesn't ever exceed 50% CPU usage. Huffyuv however will go up to around 65%, so it does at least slightly make use of both cores. I imagine that due to its high bitrate, the limiting factor has become my hard drives.
Depending on what I'm encoding, Virtualdub may use up to 600MB of RAM.
I use Videostudio for MPEG2 encoding. It never makes full use of both cores - it'll process on both, but it still stays below 50% CPU usage.
