Will this influence your decision of when to upgrade? Will you hold out for a DX 10 compliant card now (g80/r600) instead of getting that new 7950GX2 or 1900XTX?

I'm personally leaning toward holding out for DX 10 cards unless you really need something right away.

Edit: Fixed link

I am holding out for the next gen cards because they will be faster than the current crop of cards. I am also waiting on Conroe to come out.

DX10 isnt a concern for me really, just want the highest performing card.

I was going to upgrade now....but have decided to wait. I have a X1800 XL and it does fine. Ill upgrade to either of those at the end of the year. Maybe Ill upgrade to AM2 now instead .

Edit: Link doesnt work for me......

P.S. Is Conroe going to be good for gaming as well ? If so...Ill go with that

DX10 cards are supposed to be not as good for DX9 and earlier games than the current generation. This is due to DX10 being a new standard from the ground up, and not being totally backwards compatible with DX9.

EDIT:
The DirectX 10 API will have completely new and faster dynamic link libraries (DLLs) and is supposed to run much faster. The company decided to cut the backward compatibility with DirectX 9, 8, 7 and lower in this API but there will be a way to use games programmed for those APIs. Microsoft will enable support for DX 9 or lower games through a software layer, meaning it might run slower.

The initial batch of DX10 games are likely not much, if at all, better than the upcoming DX9 games. This doesn't influence my decision at all. I usually buy a card and keep it as long as possible then get a new card with a good power boost. My current plans already have me upgraded to an X1900XT, this will tide me over for a good while. My next planned upgrade is an X2 3800+ when it hits the $160'ish price range after Conroe's release next month. Unless the Opteron 165's which are in a similar price range as the X2 3800+ drops to similar levels I'll buy that instead. I already have 2GB of RAM so that's set. Maybe another 400GB+ HD. Those TV shows and anime and uhh...stuff...fills up the HD fast.

I don't think I will upgrade my CPU and motherboard until DDR3 hits as I currently see no significant reason to move to AM2 or Conroe. The cost of replacing the motherboard, RAM and CPU to move up doesn't make sense considering the rather minor (at this time) performance gained. Virtualization sounds cool and it will be available in Conroe I believe as well as in Socket AM2 CPU's but I don't think, due to immature software, it will be ready for prime time for a while, much like the 64 bit extensions in the Athlon 64's.

Current plans for video card upgrade is the second generation of DX10 cards. Which likely will be revised R600 and G80 cards. Hopefully with better temps and power draw than we're currently seeing. Now, this can all change depending on how well The R600 or G80 wows me. The performance of these cards would really have to knock me over for me to jump.

Faster than an overclocked FX-62 in some games, so I think that's a yes.

Christ, do the Inquirer write anything that isn't purely speculation? I want to see the names of some titles, until then the Inquirer can STFU.

Is there a current roadmap type chart that shows the Conroe chips and what the speeds will be ? Determining prices etc :

What might this stuff be? Umm... I wont be upgrading for a long time, or at least until a cheap DX10 card comes out that will keep me goin for a while.

More rumor, bad spelling, and horrible grammar from the Inq. Just stop posting it...

Souces we spike to said the first DirectX 10 titles will be ready at the same time s Vista and, if we are lucky, we might be able to buy both Vista and DX 10 titles in early 2007.

Do they even proof read... ? Sigh.

I'll prob get the refresh R600 part since my crossfire rig should carry me for a while. Still, I might get a little edgy if Crysis gets a kinda choppy. It's a test of will.

I really hope that the game developers are going to bring out ports for the pc instead of actually spending time with the pc to make it run nice.

It is also not hard to port Xbox 360 games to DirectX 10 due to the similar hardware capabilities.

DX10 games will run just fine on DX9 hardware, you'll just miss some of the eye-candy (or maybe, none at all).

I think it's rather foolish to get a DX10 card months before DX10 is even released.
