Joe

Ps: My specs are http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=27&threadid=1922100 but with a P5W DH not P5N32.

I would get a X1900XT and upgrade in February or whenever...actually that is exactly what I am doing! The X1900XT is better bang for the buck right now than the 7900GT IMHO.

On a side note: is it supported and is it worth getting XP 64bit?

Thanks :)

I can't tell you the best thing to do, but I'm building a rig almost exactly like yours and I'm going with the 7950gx2. I don't intend on getting Vista until well after release. I need to see how other people are making out with it first. Since DX10 will be Vista only, I think the 7950gx2 will be well aged before games really start to take advantage of DX10.

Edit: here's a link to a 7950gx2 review http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/GX2/index.htm

If you are gaming then x64 is not worth it. At the moment, there are very few applications which are 64bit meaning that there isn't that much need for it. As far as graphics cards go, only recently has DX9 become a requirement for games so I expect that it will be sometime around Christmas 2007 that DX10 and Vista will be mandatory. I think that you should get a good card now, but not a 7950 as I believe that they are quite buggy and have the cooling of only one card so run quite hot. Something like an x1900 or a 7900gtx would probably be a better choice. As for Windows, get XP Home as Pro isn't really worth it and x64 definately isn't needed.

Hope this helps.

Oops late response, thanks for the advice, unfortunately im willing to pay extra on cooling if the 7950gx2 will last me longer (as I have the money) and I have heard some good things about it elsewhere, but you really think its worth it to get a lower quality Graphics card?

Well the GX2 is kind of buggy right now from everything I have read. What kind of resolution are you gaming at as that may change my recommendation.

If you have money to burn then just go for it, but if you are only going to be upgrading in a few months, and you want DX10 capabilities, then get 1900XT and upgrade then.

Forget XP 64-bit and all the driver-hell stories that go with it. (Not a knock on Microsoft...but 32-bit XP is pretty damn fine).

And unless you are going to run 1900x1200 with everything set to high, don't bother with a 7950GX2. That 7900GT should serve you fine at lower res and everything high-medium. If you can spring for a little extra, get one of them X1900XTs with the great new pricing and it will easily last you an year with near-top-level performance.

The thing is i like to play middle aged games on top top graphics, rather than spend money on newest games (games atm are FEAR, Oblivion, BF2, Command and Conq, AOE3 etc).... Atm i have a small 17" monitor running at 1280x1024 with my current rig, however at christmas i will be upgrading to a ~21inch or so.

Thanks everyone for your quick replies :) Last question now, i promise, is it worth upgrading to a e6700 with the money saved? Or get surround speakers and save most of the money for a DX 10 card? (Hopefully they wont be too expensive!)

Thanks :D

A good 5.1 system adds alot to most games IMO. I wouldn't get an e6700, I'd stay with a lower end chip and overclock it some.

Everything above the E6600 is a waste of money IMO.
