I was wondering if anyone could either explain how DWDM works - not just explain multiplexing but how the actual apparatus works, and why the frequencies of light don't mix, etc.

One more thing - DWDM is used on sigle mode, not multi-mode fiber right?
 
I'll ask one of the guys who sits in the row of cubes across from me. They do all of our fiber transport planning, and they are always talking about about their dwdm equipment. They are voice guys, not data, but maybe they know something anyway. I'll post again Monday.
